Knights Drop Pair to RPI to Close Out 2026 Campaign

Potsdam, NY – A couple of big innings by the visitors, one in each game, put the Clarkson University Softball team in a hole as the Golden Knights suffered a pair of 11-2 defeats at the hands of Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights saw their season come to an end at 7-28 overall and 1-13 in the Liberty League, while the Engineers edged forward to 25-11 and 10-4 in conference games.

In the opener, RPI scored a pair of runs in the first, second, and fourth innings, but truly broke the game open in the seventh with a five-spot. RPI picked up its first run on a bases loaded walk by Addison Shaffer in the first and then netted another run thanks to a fielder's choice with the bases still loaded. An inning later, Sydney Speanburg delivered a sacrifice fly and Evann McDowell plated another with an RBI single, making it 4-0.

The Engineers added two more in the fourth, the first coming on an RBI hit from Olivia Termi, and the second coming on a dropped fly ball in the right field corner. However, it was the seventh where the Engineers made sure that there would be no comeback when the team plated five. Ryleigh Falvey and Lauren Cosselman produced back-to-back doubles to plate the first two runs, Sarah Decker drove in one with a single, Callista Adorno flied out to score another, and Jackie Cutting produced an infield single to score the final run of the frame.

Clarkson rallied with a pair in the bottom of the seventh, the first coming around on a throwing error, scoring Kelsea Flanagan, and the second coming in thanks to the single to right off the bat of Isabel Haspil which plated Ryleigh Fontana.

Emily Martin went 2-for-3 in the opener for Clarkson, while four different hitters had multi-hit games for the Engineers. Callie Volker earned the win for RPI, allowing just one hit in four frames, while Ry Garcia took the loss, tossing the first two innings for the Knights.

Game two had the Engineers squeak a few across in the opening innings, but it was in the fourth that RPI blew the game open. RPI started the scoring with a solo home run from Maddy Brooks in the second and then added two more in the third with a bases loaded single up the middle by Olivia Termi and a single back up the box by Lauren Cosselman, making it 3-0. The Golden Knights got one back in the bottom half of the inning with some two-out magic, as Emily Bulone singled to move Ry Garcia to third, and then Lexi Rydelek singled up the middle to score Garcia.

RPI responded with eight in the top of the fourth. A bases loaded single by Callista Adorno made it 4-1, but Termi then followed with a grand slam to put the tally at 8-1. A few more singles got rally going again, and Gabby Heim and Sydney Speanburg delivered run-scoring hits for an 11-1 advantage. The Knights scored one in the bottom half of the inning when Emily Martin reached on an error while bunting for a hit, scoring Ryleigh Fontana all the way from the first when the throw got away.

Bulone finished 2-for-3 in the second contest to lead Clarkson's offense. The top of RPI's lineup did the majority of the damage, as the one-through-four batters accounted for 11 of the team's 17 hits and eight runs batted in. Ava Markert allowed one unearned run in three innings to pick up the win while Amanda Corrice took the loss for the Knights.
