Cartier Wins Pair of Events to Lead Knights in Tri/Quad Meet at Union

Schenectady, NY – Mason Cartier won a pair of events to headline the Clarkson University Swimming & Diving team's effort in its opening tri-meet/quad-meet on Saturday, as the Golden Knights competed against host Union College, St. Lawrence University, and Smith College.   

The Golden Knights picked up wins against both the Union men and St. Lawrence men, while the Knights women lost each of their three matchups against Smith, SLU, and Union.

FULL RESULTS

Cartier won a pair of individual events, taking the top spot in both the 50 backstroke (25.72) and 100 backstroke (56.21), with teammates following him up each time. James Fedele was second in the 50 (27.14) and Owen White was runner up in the 100 back (57.33). Gavin Cibelli also won both of his dives, finishing first in the 1-meter (244.65) and the 3-meter (263.15) with teammate Carter Lancto taking second in each (143.50 1-meter, 187.65 3-meter).

Andrew Sammons was Clarkson's other winner on the day in the deeper than usual pools of competition, taking the top spot in the 50 breaststroke (28.89). Sammons later was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.89) as well.

Clarkson's men had a few other runner-up showings during the meet. Casey Everett came in second in the 500 freestyle (5:04.29), Landon Colby was just off the pace in the 100 butterfly (54.93) and 50 fly (24.94), Gavin Stuhler took silver in the 50 freestyle (22.72), and Owen White was second in the 100 individual medley (57.98). Both of Clarkson's 'A' relays also took second, as the 200 medley relay was runner up (1:40.52) and the 200 freestyle relay also placed silver (1:32.13).

On the women's side, the Knights highlights came from a pair of sophomores and one first-year collegian. Natasha Hurff placed second in the 500 freestyle (5:42.75) and Evelyn Vieira took second in the 1-meter dive (202.90) and then third in the 3-meter dive (198.90). Freshman Paige Davis hit the touchpad for third in the 100 individual medley (1:06.52) near the conclusion of the meet.
