Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Clarkson Comes Up Short of Weekend Sweep of Fourth-Ranked Penn State

State College, PA – Despite two first-period goals, the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team found itself on the short end of a 5-2 decision as fourth-ranked Penn State used a strong stretch in the second period to take the lead and even the weekend series against the Green and Gold at Pegula Ice Arena.

The Golden Knights saw their record dip to 1-2 on the year while Penn State edged forward to 3-1. Clarkson will be on the road against next weekend, taking on RIT on Saturday evening.

Just like Thursday night, the Golden Knights scored very early on, this time on the first shot and only 21 seconds into the game. With an odd man rush coming out of the neutral zone, Clarkson capitalized on its attempt as Erik Bargholtz found Luka Sukovic, who went high on the blocker side and top shelf for a goal before many people had settled into their seats.

It took more than six minutes for Penn State to get a shot on goal, but the Nittany Lions were buzzing around once the first shot was taken. Penn State went on the power play midway through the frame, but the Knights were able to keep the Lions without a shot on goal in that stretch.

Just as it seemed the Nittany Lions would get out of the opening frame with only a one goal deficit, Clarkson was able to pick up a second in the waning moments of the first period. Justin Cote found Tate Taylor, and Taylor's shot may have deflected off the stick of a Penn State defender, ticking over Joshua Fleming's shoulder and under the crossbar to make it 2-0 at 19:47.

Much of the second period saw the teams playing unevenly as plenty of penalties were called. Penn State took advantage of those whistles in a number of ways, scoring three times in a stretch of less than seven minutes. The first goal came from JJ Wiebusch, as he finished off a feed from Charlie Cerrato in front at 3:07. Shortly after that goal, Ben Schoen was whistled for a five-minute major, providing Clarkson with some chances at the Penn State cage. One shot rang off the post, which would have given the Knights, a 3-1 lead, but instead a bad bounce allowed Penn State to tie the score. Just as the five-minute major was ending, the puck hopped over the stick of a Clarkson defender and Schoen got the puck essentially coming out of the penalty box, scoring an unassisted goal t 8:40. Another penalty put Clarkson up a skater, but it was Penn State that ended up with an odd man rush 2-on-1, and the centering pass took yet another funky hop, with Dane Dowiak tallying the short-handed goal at 9:48.

The third period saw Penn State tack on a couple of insurance goals despite Clarkson having the edge early on in shots (5-2). The Nittany Lions scored on their third try of the period as Charlie Cerrato found the back of the net at 10:38. Four minutes later, Ben Schoen took a backdoor feed on the weak side to make it 5-2. In the last few minutes, the Knights pulled their goalie, but a late penalty had Clarkson on the penalty kill, ending any hope of a comeback.

Penn State owned a 31-23 edge in shots on goal on Friday and also had the advantage 30-24 in faceoffs. Both teams racked up penalty minutes at the end of the game with a number of misconducts. Shane Soderwall finished with 26 saves for the Knights, while Fleming had 21 stops for Penn State.
