Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Knights Net Three in Final Two Minutes to Beat SLU, 5-2

Canton, NY – Three goals in less than 40 seconds late in the third period turned a tight game into runaway win for the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team, as the Golden Knights claimed a 5-2 victory over St. Lawrence University Friday night at Appleton Arena.

The Golden Knights improved to 14-7-2 overall and 8-3-0 in ECAC Hockey with their ninth win on the road in 2024-25, while St. Lawrence fell to 6-16-1 and 2-8-1 in league contests. The two teams match up for a Saturday night tilt at Cheel Arena.

With the game tied 2-2 late in the third period and neither team having scored for more than 36 consecutive minutes of ice time, Clarkson scored the game-winner with only 92 seconds to go and then tacked on two empty net markers. The go-ahead goal came when Brady Egan found Tate Taylor on the right side and skated up ice. Taylor twice picked his head up to locate Ayrton Martino skating along with him but in the slot, finding Martino for a tip in at 18:28, with Martino shoveling the puck upward and in to make it 3-2. Martino would score an empty net goal 18 seconds later on an easy 2-on-1 and Ty Brassington scored on just about the longest shot one can take, also into an empty net, flipping the puck over all of his teammates and six St. Lawrence skaters from his own goal line and in at 19:07.

The three late goals, spread apart by just 39 seconds, changed the narrative of the game for those not watching, as a hotly contested matchup brewed for the previous 58-plus minutes.

The Golden Knights took little time getting on the board, picking up a goal less than a minute into the contest. The puck was deep in the St. Lawrence defensive end where Ellis Rickwood challenged the Saints along the board and the puck leaked out to Ayrton Martino, who quickly noticed Trey Taylor all alone in the slot. A squared pass to Taylor created an easy wrist shot that beat Mason Kucenski on his stick side just 43 seconds into the game.

St. Lawrence tied the game about six minutes later, taking advantage of a lengthy shift to wear out the Clarkson shift. The Saints kept it in their offensive zone on several occasions and it was Philippe Chapleau who skated into the middle slot area, sending the puck over Ethan Langenegger's right shoulder at 6:26.

Clarkson regained its lead midway through the period while on the power play. It was Jared Mangan that began the rush by taking the puck into the St. Lawrence zone. After a few passes around the perimeter, the puck ended up back on Mangan's stick and he utilized a screen to snap a shot off from high in the slot at 10:21.

The offense continued at the start of the second period with a power play marker. Clarkson was whistled for a hooking call just 34 seconds into the period and St. Lawrence picked up its second goal late in the power play chance. It looked like Clarkson might clear the puck when it was poked out of the slot, but Drake Burgin skated over and just kept it inside the blue line. After a quick cycle, Burgin found Tyler Cristall near the top of the left circle and Cristall threaded the needle through traffic and snuck the puck inside the opposite post at 2:20 to tie the contest.

Ethan Langenegger finished with 35 saves for the Knights while Mason Kucenski stopped 27 shots in the St. Lawrence net. SLU ended up with a 37-32 advantage in shots on goal (62-54 overall). Each team was 1-for-3 on the power play and the Knights had a slight advantage at the faceoff circle, winning 34 of 62 tries.
