Clarkson Offense Opens Up in 6-2 Win Over Union

Potsdam, NY - Justin Cote scored twice and Bryce Sookro tallied twice to help the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team to its biggest offensive outburst of the young season as the Golden Knights opened ECAC Hockey play with a 6-2 win over Union College Friday night at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knighted edged back to .500 at 4-4-1 overall and won the ECAC opener for a 1-0 league mark, while the Garnet Chargers fell to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in league play. Clarkson takes on RPI tomorrow night at Cheel.

Last February, the two teams kept the lamp operators behind each goal plenty busy as Clarkson finished with an 8-7 victory against the Garnet Chargers and the start of Friday night's game appeared to be on its way to a repeat of last season's result. Each team scored on the power play in the opening five minutes with the two goals separated by just 47 seconds. Union was the first to score while up a player, winning the faceoff and going point to point before Lucas Buzziol scored right in front of the net off a pass from Tyler Dunbar, making it 1-0 for the visitors with only a handful of seconds ticking off the clock on the power play.

Clarkson returned the favor, scoring only nine seconds into its power play chance. The Knights likewise won the faceoff and a pass from Remi Gelinas went to Talon Sigurdson at the left side of the crease. Instead of trying to stuff the puck in close, he went from low to high for a wide open Justin Cote, who rifled a shot in at 4:49 to tie the game 1-1.

The Garnet Chargers continued to display one of the top power plays in the country, one that entered the game operating at 37.0% success, by scoring a second man-up goal in the final minutes of the first period. Unlike the first power play marker that was scored only six seconds in, this one took close to the full time. Union was able to keep the puck in the zone at the left point and Connor Smith walked in from there with a wrist shot from the left circle to score at 17:45, helping the Garnet Chargers to a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.

The Green and Gold tied the contest early in the second period, creating a turnover in the neutral zone and capitalizing on a 2-on-1 . Tyler Wallace slid the puck from the left circle to the right for the waiting stick of Cote, again wristing a hard shot on the one-timer at 3:24 to put the score at 2-2. Not to be outdone by Union's power play, Clarkson scored on its second chance while up a skater late in the second period to claim its first lead of the game. With only 10 seconds to go in the period and the power play, Michael Craig sent a pass from the left point to Bryce Sookro at the right circle and he was able to beat Brayden Gillespie for a 3-2 lead through two periods.

Although more than 15 minutes separated goals for the Golden Knights in real time, only 20 seconds separated the scores in game time for Bryce Sookro. Clarkson won the faceoff to start the third period and sent the puck in deep. Sookro was at the right point and threw a puck on net and for the second time this season he surprised a goalie with a quick shot from that spot, as his shot went through the pads of Gillespie at the 0:10 mark of the third period.

Clarkson picked up a valuable insurance goal six minutes later to increase its lead to three. After Union had briefly established the zone in the Clarkson end, the Knights gained possession behind the puck and two quick passes had the Knights in a 2-on-1 and then a 3-on-2 going the other way. Luka Sukovic took a slap shot from the top of the right circle that was stopped by Cameron Korpi, who had taken over for Gillespie after the fourth Clarkson goal, but the puck found Mael St-Denis on the doorstep on the left side of the crease to make it 5-2 at 6:08.

Union was unable to score while playing even with the Knights for the next 10 minutes, forcing the Garnet Chargers to pull Korpi with less than four minutes to go. A minute later, Clarkson tallied for the sixth time in the contest when Talon Sigurdson scored on the empty net at 17:43.

Clarkson finished with a 30-24 edge in shots on goal and both teams went 2-for-2 on the power play. Shane Soderwall ended the contest with 22 saves, while Gillespie had 15 stops and Korpi made nine saves.
