Knights Come Up Empty in Final Push Against SLU, 2-1

Potsdam, NY – Three total goals in the first 13 minutes of the first period was all the teams could muster as the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to St. Lawrence University Saturday night in front of a sold out Cheel Arena crowd.

The Golden Knights, ranked 20th in the most recent USCHO poll, fell to 14-8-2 overall and 8-4-0 in the league standings while St. Lawrence improved to 7-16-1 and 3-8-1 in conference games. Clarkson, still residing in the top four in the league standings, hosts Colgate and Cornell next weekend.

For the second straight night, it was Trey Taylor scoring the initial goal of the game, though Saturday's tally took a little more time than his first-minute goal of the day before. Luka Sukovic collected the puck near the Clarkson bench and sent a cross ice pass to Ryan Taylor, who skated through the neutral zone and into the SLU defensive zone. Taylor then passed it into the slot, a little behind Trey Taylor, but the latter Taylor did enough to keep his feet and did an off-balance spinorama to beat SLU's Mason Kucenski at 5:57.

St. Lawrence gained its first lead of the weekend midway through the first period with goals separated by a little over two minutes. Shortly after the media break, St. Lawrence was able to pick up the puck in the neutral zone for a quick 3-on-2 transition. Gabe Westling dropped a pass back to Jan Lasak between the slot and the top of the right circle, and Lasak wristed one past Ethan Langenegger at 10:48.

Only a few seconds after the next faceoff, Clarkson was whistled for an infraction, putting the Saints on the power play. Though the Knights had a solid shorthanded chance and actually carried the play despite being down a skater. A late 3-on-2 break at the end of the power play resulted in a couple of saves by Ethan Langenegger, but the third chance was put home off a second rebound when Isack Bandu knocked the puck in on the left side of the crease at 12:58, just a brief moment after the power play concluded.

Clarkson spent a bit too much time skating down a player after two penalties were called on the Knights in the second period, but the Saints never made much of the advantage, getting just three shots on goal in that four minute stretch. It was Clarkson that had the best chances late in the period, with two consecutive strong shifts. During one of those, Talon Siguardson whistled a puck off the left pipe, hitting it squarely for a big rebound.

Looking for the equalizer, the Golden Knights kept the St. Lawrence defense busy thanks to a flurry of shots near the midway point of the period, which included a power play opportunity. Mason Kucenski had a strong run between the pipes for St. Lawrence, making some saves on a number of chances in close. The best of those came with just under six minutes to go when Ellis Rickwood created a chance with a toe drag, dishing the puck to Ayrton Martino's backhand, but Kucenski somehow denied it with his stick and smothered the puck without allowing a rebound.

After an icing call with 1:43 to go, Ethan Langenegger vacated the Clarkson crease for an extra skater and the Golden Knights kept the puck in the SLU defensive zone for the next 90 seconds with several close calls. None were closer than a Ryan Taylor shot from the bottom of the left circle, but Kucenski slid over and squeezed the post and the puck, again providing no rebound for the Knights.

Both teams were scoreless on the power play and Clarkson ended up with a modest 27-25 edge in shots on goal. Kucenski kept the Knights off the board for the final 54 minutes and had 26 saves while Langenegger denied 23 shots from the Saints.
