Two Third Period Goals Send Knights to Defeat Versus Colgate

Potsdam, NY – A pair of goals in the third period kept the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team without a point for the second straight game, as the Golden Knights suffered a 2-0 defeat against Colgate University in ECAC Hockey action Friday night at Cheel Arena.

Post Game with Coach Houle

The Golden Knights fell to 14-9-2 overall and 8-5-0 in league contests while the Raiders jumped them in the conference standings, moving to 13-10-2 and 8-4-1. Clarkson faces Cornell University on Saturday night, looking to end a scoreless run of 114 straight minutes.

The first period was relatively quiet with just a total of 13 shots on goal between the two teams, but few of those opportunities were truly challenging for either Clarkson's Ethan Langenegger or Colgate's Andrew Takacs. That would change in the second period when a flurry of penalties created chances for the teams. Colgate had a power play early on in the second, though the best scoring opportunity would come for the Golden Knights when Garrett Dahm nearly came up with yet another shorthanded goal, but his attempt was denied the right leg pad of Takacs.

Midway through the second period, a number of offsetting penalties saw the teams skate 4-on-4 for a bit, except that Colgate would have to endure a major penalty to give Clarkson a potentially lengthy power play. However, an additional interference penalty called on the Knights roughly a minute later shortened that scoring chance and changed the dynamic of that stretch of play, as the game stayed scoreless through two periods.

Clarkson began to get some excellent scoring chances in the first half of the third period, most of which came from Ayrton Martino. The first came on a shot in the slot just outside of the crease as Takacs made a glove save low to his left at 3:12 against Martino. Three minutes later, Martino was denied again, this time on a backhand that forced Takacs to sprawl and cover all the way into the left circle. Three additional minutes later, Martino was once more stopped by Takacs, this time on the doorstep with another backhand.

Colgate's offense did not suffer from the same drought, taking advantage of a turnover and transition to score a pair of goals in a stretch of roughly five minutes. The first came when Clarkson was attempting to clear its defensive zone, but the puck was intercepted by Niko Rexine at the top of the slot. Rexine then skated in with a few moves, eventually tossing one in with a backhand at 4:51 to put the score at 1-0 with the unassisted goal. The second score for the Raiders came immediately after Martino was stymied for the third time in the period. Right after Martino's backhand was stonewalled by Takacs, the puck went the other way with Brett Chorske skating up the left side unimpeded. He drew a defender his way which allowed Michael Neumeier to take the slot and his wrist shot went to the high side of Langenegger's blocker side at 10:06.

Langenegger was pulled with three minutes to go in the game and the offense was all Clarkson the rest of the way. Unfortunately for the Knights, all seven of the shots in the final moments went wide, were blocked, or found the body of Takacs.

Clarkson finished with a 29-22 edge in shots on goal and a 68-43 advantage in total shots. Both teams were empty on the power play, Colgate going scoreless on four ties and the Knights on two chances. Langenegger made 20 saves in the contest, while
Takacs stopped 29.
