Sukovic Nets Pair in Knights 3-3 Tie Versus Cornell

Potsdam, NY – Luka Sukovic scored twice, once on the power play and once even strength, to help the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team comeback to earn a 3-3 tie against Cornell University in ECAC Hockey action Saturday night at Cheel Arena.

Post Game with Coach Houle

Though Cornell would win the shootout after 65 minutes of hockey (2-1), the Golden Knights still picked up a point, moving to 14-9-3 and 8-5-1 in league play, while the Big Red saw their record to go 8-7-6 and 5-5-4.

For a team starving for some conversions on offense and needing an early spark, the start of Saturday's contest did not go the Golden Knights' way as Cornell found the back of the net twice in the first six minutes. The first score came a little over three minutes into the game following a long defensive shift. Michael Suda was able to keep the puck in the Clarkson defensive zone, which allowed a new skater to jump in for the Big Red. That new skater was Sullivan Mack, who took a shot from the left circle that went wide, but kept the play going, and eventually puck leaked out to the right boards for Hoyt Stanley. He then got through the right circle and was just short of the slot before he flipped a backhand on goal and past the blocker of Ethan Langenegger at 3:35.

Just two minutes later, again a play was extended when Hank Kempt kept the puck in the zone. He slid over to the top of the slot and took a hard shot that was denied by Langenegger, but the rebound found the stick of Jake Kraft on the left side just outside of the crease, and he lifted it over Langenegger at 5:44 to make it 2-0.

Clarkson skated well for the next stretch and finally ended a lengthy scoreless drought on its second power play chance of the period. It took some time for the Knights' power play to get going, but once they did, it ended in a goal from Luka Sukovic. With both teams battling for the puck behind the net, it eventually slid out to the high slot for Tristan Sarsland, who took a shot that was stopped by Ian Shane. However, the Cornell goaltender couldn't control the rebound and Sukovic was there to tip the puck in at 13:17, with Sarsland and Ryan Bottrill earning assists.

Post game with Luka Sukovic

Early in the second period, Clarkson carried the play due to a power play chance and then an extended run in the Cornell defensive zone. The Knights kept the puck in Cornell's end for two full minutes and had a few changes to create some tired legs for the Big Red. However, when the Big Red finally did get a break with a center ice faceoff, they quickly converted. Though the goal was scored by Sullivan Mack on a wrist shot near the left circle, the play was saved by Jonathan Castagna, when he collected a deflected pass and sent the backhand to Mack for the shot at 6:30.

A few minutes later, the Knights were kept in the game thanks to Ethan Langenegger as Cornell had a 2-0 rush with plenty of options, but the transfer denied the attempt, making two outstanding saves in the game, going along with a sprawling leg save he made in the first period.

The stops from Langenegger proved important as Clarkson remained in the game and cut the margin to just one goal late in the second period. Tate Taylor skated in near the top of the right circle and created some space by surprising the Cornell defense with a spin move for a backhand on net. Ian Shane made the save but Sukovic was there to clean up the rebound again, scoring at 17:02 for his second goal of the game.

Just 90 seconds later, the Knights tied the game with perhaps the most patient play of the season from Trey Taylor. Third seconds prior to the goal, Cornell's Jack O'Leary lost his stick while jousting with Clarkson's Ryan Bottrill, and eventually he found himself defending Taylor. Holding on to the puck and stickhandling for 18 full seconds with O'Leary trying to stay with him, Taylor shook off the defender and wristed a shot through traffic in front, tying the game at 18:35.

Post Game with Trey Taylor

The third period saw both goaltenders make some outstanding saves to keep the game tied, though both were also aided by the pipes. Sullivan Mack hit the crossbar on the power play early on in the third and late in the frame Tristan Sarsland fired a shot that hit the post with a little over two minutes left in the game.

In overtime, Clarkson had a few scoring chances with Sarsland nearly scoring on a backhand when he leapt across the crease to try and get a stick on the puck, but it was Cornell that would have a power play for the final 35 seconds when Ayrton Martino was called for interference, but all attempts were denied, sending the game to a shootout.

Clarkson ended the game with a 38-27 edge in shots on goal and a 72-49 lead in shots overall, holding the Big Red scoreless on four power play chances while going 1-for-4 itself. Ethan Langenegger made 24 saves in the contest for Clarkson and Ian Shane stopped 35 shots for Cornell.
