Rochester, NY - Junior Devin Fitzpatrick picked up a win and had six hits for the Clarkson University Softball team as the Golden Knights split the third Liberty League doubleheader of April, winning the opener against RIT 4-2 but falling in the second contest 9-7 on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights moved to 10-14 overall and 2-4 in the Liberty League while RIT went to 9-12-1 and 3-3 in conference games. Clarkson next heads to Cortland for a non-league doubleheader on Wednesday.

In the opening game, Clarkson got on the board with a run in the first and two more in the third, never trailing for any part of the contest. Katy Aldous led off the game with a walk, stole second, moved up to third on a sacrifice bunt, and then scored on a wild pitch, as the Knights recorded a run without the benefit of a hit. In the third, Molly Pezzano reached on an error and moved up on a wild pitch to get the inning rolling. Devin Fitzpatrick singled to put runners on the corners, allowing for Bridget Kerwin's single through the infield to score Pezzano. Fitzpatrick then later came around on a ground out by Zoey Kovach, putting the tally at 3-0.

RIT scratched a run across in the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back triples from Emma Merkley and Maddy Cook, only to see Clarkson get the three-run margin back in the top of the fifth. Fitzpatrick led off with a double to left-center and moved up to third on a ground out. Isabel Haspil then delivered a two-out single to center to plate Fitzpatrick. RIT had a last attempt with offense in the seventh thanks to Bailey Kehl's lead off triple. Kristin Hino scored her with a single, but that was all the Tigers could get.

Fitzpatrick finished 3-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored and also went seven strong innings, giving up six hits and a walk while striking out three. Haspil also finished 2-for-3 in the game for the Knights. Fitzpatrick's counterpart, Jessia Majot of RIT, also threw well, giving up seven hits and four walks with just two of her four runs allowed earned in seven innings of work.

The two teams matched the offensive output of game one in the first inning of game two as Clarkson scored twice and RIT had four in the bottom half of the first. The Knights got their first run thanks to an RBI double off the base of the wall by Fitzpatrick allowing Aldous to score. A sacrifice fly from Kovach scored another run to give the Knights a 2-0 advantage. RIT responded quickly with four in the bottom half of the inning. The first run came around on a dropped pop fly and then Erin Ozminkowski singled in another. A sac fly from Majot put RIT up by one and Maria Minemier followed with an RBI single for a 4-2 Tigers' lead.

Clarkson came back quickly with three in the second. Kaya Johnson tripled to right and Emma Sabourin singled on a bunt. Katy Aldous then singled through the left side to put the score at 4-3. Elizabeth Greco singled in a run to tie the game and Fitzpatrick followed with another RBI single to put the Knights in the lead once again. Back-to-back doubles from Emma Merkley and Maddy Cook tied the game in the third.

Three extra-base hits in the span of four batters gave RIT a 7-5 lead in the fourth, but the Knights came back within one when Katy Aldous stole second and then came around to score on a throwing and fielding error on her attempt. The Tigers picked up two more runs in the sixth on a single by Majot, which proved to be key for the home team. In the top of the seventh, Clarkson Zoey Kovach and Isabel Haspil singled and doubled to put runners on second and third. A walk to Kaya Johnson loaded the bases with none out and two batters later Katy Aldous singled in one. With the bases still loaded, a strikeout and a fly ball to deep center ended the game.

Aldous finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two more driven home, while Fitzpatrick was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Kaya Johnson also went 2-for-3 for the Knights in the second contest. For RIT, Merkley and Cook each had three hits.
