Schroeder Shines for Golden Knights at North Country Invitational

Potsdam, NY – Michael Schroeder won each of his starts and the Clarkson University Swimming and Diving program's men's team won all four of the relays to take the top spot at the North Country Invitational this weekend, held at Maxcy Hall.

The Golden Knights' men placed first among four total schools with 687 points, ahead of Oswego State (480), SUNY Potsdam (290), and St. Michael's (10), with the latter sending only a diver to the event. Clarkson's women were the runners-up, finishing with 418 points, trailing Oswego State (557) but ahead of SUNY Potsdam (343).

Gavin Stuhler and Landon Colby were the common denominators in Clarkson's four relay victories, with Stuhler swimming the last leg in each. The 400 medley relay team of Schroeder, Andrew Sammons, Colby, and Stuhler finished in 3:39.57 and the 200 freestyle relay group of Andrew Sypko, Hannes Lohse, Colby, and Stuhler closed out the first day in 1:30.19. On Saturday, Schroeder, Calvin Woolfolk, Colby, and Stuhler finished in 1:39.95 in the 200 medley relay and Sypko, Colby, Lohse, and Stuhler ended the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:22.17.  

Schroeder was the big winner for the Knights, taking first place in each of his three starts. He won the 200 backstroke in 2:07.33, with Mason Cartier and Owen White placing second and third, respectively. Schroeder then picked up first in the 200 butterfly in 2:02.22 (Colby was second) and followed with a win in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.35 (Cartier and James Fedele came in second and third).

Casey Everett won both of the distance events, taking first in the 500 freestyle by more than nine seconds in 4:56.28 and then winning the 1650 freestyle by over a minute with a time of 17:18.35. Gavin Stuhler also won a pair of events, taking first in the 50 freestyle (22.03) and the 200 freestyle (1:48.08) while settling for the runner-up spot in the 100 freestyle (49.25). Gavin Cibelli won both of the dives, finishing the 1-meter with a score of 207.25 and the 3-meter at 211.55.

Several others won individual events for the Knights as well. Colby had the top spot in the 100 butterfly (54.57), Andrew Sammons touched the pad first in the 200 breaststroke (2:14.78), and Owen White came in first in the 400 individual medley (4:28.15).

On the women's side, each of Clarkson's relay runs finished as runner-up, gaining key points each time. Fiona Reilly had three top-three finishes, taking first in the 200 individual medley (2:19.89) and then placing second in the 200 breaststroke (2:38.26) and third in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.28). Aurora Zary also claimed a win in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:16.28, more than 16 seconds faster than the next swimmer, while also placing second in the 100 backstroke (1:04.66).

Gabriela McSwieney had a pair of runner-up placements, taking the second spot in the 1650 freestyle in 19:10.95 and then the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:04.50. Evelyn Vieira also took the second position in each of her dives. Her 3-meter score was 193.50 and the 1-meter tally was 205.05. Natasha Hurff also had a runner-up finish in the 500 freestyle, as she completed that event in 5:31.41.
