CU Alpine Women Capture USCSA Regional GS Title, Men Take Fifth

Carrabassett Valley, ME – For the first time in a decade, the Clarkson University Women's Alpine Ski team claimed first at the USCSA Regionals, as both the Golden Knights' women and men will advance to the USCSA National Championships in early March out in California.

The Golden Knights' women took first by a few seconds to capture their first regional title since 2011, which was the USCSA Mideast Regional Championships. The Clarkson men took fifth out of 15 teams, trailing the fourth place team by a tenth of a second.

First-year collegian Hannah Goetz took third among 78 skiers and was the top performer of the day for the Knights, finishing her two runs in 1:47.78. Classmate Elyse Donaghue took fourth, but trailed her teammate by .10 seconds with a time of 1:47.88 thanks to a the second-fastest, second-run of the day. Shannon Quiles closed out Clarkson's team time by making a significant jump in the standings, as she finished 14th overall (1:58.06) when her opening run time had her only in 25th. Kyla Butler finished in 24th in 1:59.32 and still would have put the Knights in first had Quiles faltered, while Kylie Brino took 32nd in 2:05.74.

The men had some troubles on Sunday, as Evan Wetzel did not finish his first run and Josh Jusiak tripped up in his second run, which did not allow any wiggle room for the remaining three Clarkson skiers. Sam Hayden ended up in ninth out of 80 skiers with a time of 1:45.39, and Zach Zientko leaped up the leaderboard with a solid second run to finish 12th overall in 1:47.01. Reed Martin then closed out Clarkson's team time in 1:49.22, good enough for 24th in the standings.
