McSwieney Wins Pair of Events in Opening Meet for CU Swimming and Diving

Schenectady, NY – Gabriela McSwieney won two distance freestyle events and Connor Tasselmyer picked up a win in the 50 freestyle as the Clarkson University Swimming & Diving team opened the 2023-24 season with a dual meet defeat at Union College.

The Golden Knights' men fell 139-97 and the women's decision was a score of 156-74. Clarkson will be closer to home next Saturday when the teams take on St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY.

McSwieney won her two long freestyle races, starting the day with a victory in the 1000 freestyle (11:29.63) and then closing it out with a win in the 500 freestyle (5:36.07). McSwieney was the lone Clarkson swimmer to have a first-place finish on the women's side, as the team had a number of second-place showings. Maria Nenadic was second in the 400 individual medley (5:13.56), Emily Greene was the runner-up in the 50 freestyle (27.03), and Ava Lamontagne was the second finisher in both the 200 freestyle (2:06.44) and 100 freestyle (59.28). Paige Cutler also placed as the runner-up in both of the diving events, scoring 147.00 in the 1-meter and 146.18 in the 3-meter.

On the men's side, Tasselmyer showed that he was close to mid-season form in the 50 freestyle as he closed out the event in just 21.74 seconds. Teammate Gavin Stuhler was second in the event with a time of 22.56 seconds. Tasselmyer later finished second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.01 seconds

Other second-place finishers for the Knights were Owen White in the 400 individual medley (4:36.94), Michael Schroeder in the 200 butterfly (2:04.97), Tristan Miranda in the 500 freestyle (5:16.65), and Colin Urmaza in the 200 breaststroke (2:25.09). Both Carter Lancto (3-meter, 158.17 points) and Max Lempert (1-meter, 172.07 points) also placed second in the two diving events.

In the four relay events, Clarkson had three second-place finishes, but also won one of the relays, as Clarkson's men came in first in the 200 freestyle relay to close out the day. The team of Tim Jordan, Andrew Sypko, Gavin Stuhler, and Connor Tasselmyer combined to record a time of 1:30.56.
