Hayden In Top 10 for FIS Race at Whiteface

Lake Placid, NY – Sam Hayden and Hannah Goetz of the Clarkson University Alpine Ski team each finished in the top 15 as the Golden Knights competed in a FIS event at Whiteface Mountain on Saturday.

Among MacConnell Division teams, the Golden Knights' women had their first second-place finish of the year, while the men took third for the fifth straight race.

Goetz ended up in 14th place overall among 80 participants in Saturday's giant slalom race, closing out the day with a time of 1:52.80. More impressively, she was second among MacConnell Division skiers. Classmate Elyse Donaghue took 24th place overall, but was just fifth out of league skiers, with a time of 1:54.39. Donaghue finished her first run in 30th place, but then had the 11th-best time in the second run, fastest among all Clarkson skiers. Closing out the Clarkson team time was Shannon Quiles, as she placed 44th in 2:02.82.

Kylie Brino (51st, 2:03.68), Kyla Butler (58th, 2:07.43), Isabella Pelkey (60th, 2:12.57), and Abigail Jacunski (65th, 2:17.87) also completed both runs to finish in the final standings in the FIS event.

For the men, Sam Hayden was the headliner, as he finished in the top 10, taking ninth out of 84 competitors with a time of 1:46.21. After the opening run, Hayden was 15th, and his second time was the 12th fastest down the course. Evan Wetzel jumped eight spots after his first run to come in 31st in 1:49.79. He was 39th in the first run and had the 27th-fastest time in his second opportunity. Zach Zientko finished off Clarkson's team score by coming in 33rd place in 1:51.06.

First-year collegians Noah Marino (34th, 1:51.36), Reed Martin (36th, 1:51.79), and Cole Rodman (39th, 1:53.37) provided depth to keep Clarkson in third had Zientko faltered, while Dylan West placed 49th (1:57.16). Josh Jusiak and Aristotle Ninos did not finish their first runs, and Adin Freeman was disqualified in his second run after placing 57th in his opening trip on the course.
