Alpine Ski | 1/19/2023 11:10:00 AM

Making up for a missed race back in mid-January, the Clarkson University Alpine Ski team will be busy this weekend, as both the men and women will be participating in three full giant slalom events on Saturday and Sunday at West Mountain.

Beginning at 9:30 am on Saturday, the Golden Knights' men will participate in two giant slaloms, meaning that the first two runs will count as one race result and the next two will be counted as the makeup, while the women will have just two runs. The opposite will the case on Sunday, as the Clarkson women will have four runs and the men just two.

The Men: Several skiers had trouble keeping their feet for all four races last year at West Mountain, but those that did performed well. Sam Hayden was third in the giant slalom on the second day and posted two top-five finishes in the slalom at the hill the previous weekend. Evan Wetzel also was fifth on day two of the second weekend at West Mountain. Dylan West had three top-15 finishes in the slalom and giant slalom, Josh Jusiak was in the top 20 in all four events, and Zach Zientko was in the top 15 twice at West Mountain in 2022. Clarkson will be sending 12 skiers to Queensbury and Greenwich this weekend, enough for two complete teams.

The Women: Since the Golden Knights' women are generally a younger group, there isn't much data regarding collegiate results. Shannon Quiles was solid a year ago in her two giant slalom races at West Mountain, finishing 18th and 17th, respectively, on back-to-back days in Queensbury. Abigail Jacunski was also in the top 40 in both races, taking 35th among 57 participants in the giant slalom on the first day at West Mountain. Joining Quiles and Jacunski this weekend are sophomore Isabella Pelkey and freshmen Elyse Donaghue, Hannah Goetz, Kylie Brino, and Kyla Butler.
