Andover, NH – Junior Sam Hayden stood out in the opening race of the 2023 season for the Clarkson University Alpine Ski team, finishing 25th out of 109 starters in a FIS race at the Proctor Ski Area, hosted by Babson College.

The Golden Knights' men came in third in the slalom, falling short by .18 seconds in the team scoring while the Clarkson women were also third by a similarly narrow margin, as they edged up a spot by .17 seconds. The team will be back for day two of the Babson Invitational with racers set to start early Sunday morning.

Skiers were dropping left and right at Proctor, as 15 failed to qualify after the first run and a further 20 skiers did not finish the second run, leaving just 74 skiers at the end. Hayden ended up 25th with a time of 1:31.96, more than seven seconds faster than any of his teammates. Zach Zientko took 49th in 1:39.33 and Jack Donaldson was 51st in 1:39.80, though his time was not included in the Clarkson's team time. Instead, the third spot to finish off the Knights' scoring was Evan Wetzel, who was 53rd with a time of 1:39.99. Dylan West took 56th in 1:42.39 and Aristotle Ninos came in 58th in 1:42.95. Reed Martin (65th, 1:54.43) and Braden Kruk (68th, 1:59.50) had solid first runs, but they were forced to hike in their second runs. Noah Marino also posted a solid first run (48.93), the fourth fastest opener for the Knights, but did not finish his second trip down the hill.

Clarkson's women did not have as much trouble on their course, and two first-year collegians showed early promise on Saturday morning. Hannah Goetz was the top performer for the Knights, coming in 32nd out of 97 starters with a time of 1:40.73, while classmate Elyse Donaghue was 39th in 1:43.27. The two were separated by just .03 seconds after the first run, but Goetz was among the top skiers in the second run, jumping up seven spots from her position after the opening trip (39th). Senior Shannon Quiles came in 48th in 1:48.03 to round out Clarkson's team time. Two more freshmen also posted solid results in their first collegiate races, as Kylie Brino took 60th in 1:52.69 and Kyla Butler came in 65th in 2:00.31.
