Wetzel Named CoSIDA Academic All-American At-Large First-Team Member

For the second straight week, one of Clarkson University's standout student-athletes earned national recognition for their academic and athletic achievements, as Evan Wetzel of the Clarkson University Alpine Ski team was picked as a CoSIDA Academic All-American At-Large First-Team member when the organization announced its selections on Tuesday afternoon.

Wetzel, who sported a flawless 4.00 grade-point average while majoring in Mechanical Engineering in his first seven semesters at Clarkson, was the lone skier to be named to the CoSIDA Academic All-American team in Division III. He was one of 15 student-athletes in Division III to make the At-Large first team, joining five swimmers, three tennis players, two volleyball players, two wrestlers, one lacrosse player, and one water polo player. At-Large selections are for sports that do not have their own Academic All-American teams, including (for men's sports) lacrosse, rifle, skiing, fencing, swimming, tennis, golf, volleyball, gymnastics, water polo, hockey and wrestling.

Wetzel is also the first Clarkson male student-athlete to be named to the CoSIDA Academic All-American At-Large First-Team since Christian Perryman, a fellow skier, accomplished the feat in 2014. The most recent male At-Large All-Americans from Clarkson were Charlie Maitland (Second-Team, 2019) and Thomas Conroy (Third-Team, 2019). Both Ana Witkowski (2019) and Christine Wright (2016) were selected At-Large All-American First-Team female members in recent years.

Along with his perfect GPA, Wetzel was a standout on the slopes for the Knights in 2022, finishing 11th among 128 skiers in the giant slalom at the USCSA National Championships along with a pair of top-six finishes at the USCSA Regionals.
