Box Score
Auburndale, FL – In the final three innings, the Clarkson University Baseball team scored five runs but its comeback effort came up short in a 9-7 defeat to Simpson College on Wednesday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Complex.

The Golden Knights fell to 2-4 on the season and will look to regroup against Endicott College on Thursday evening. Simpson improved to 7-1 on the year.

Simpson got on the scoreboard first with a sacrifice fly from Matthew Marquez in the bottom of the second, but Clarkson came back with a run in the top of the third as Caleb Doyle hit a two-out solo home run to left. The two teams traded runs in the bottom of the third and top of the fourth as well, with the Storm reclaiming the lead briefly on a Brady Held sac fly. Clarkson enjoyed another clutch two-out hit in the fourth as Jake Millich doubled in Cam Jarrett to make the score 2-2 through four frames.

The Storm took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four times. Held doubled in a pair to put the tally at 4-2 and Kaleb Bauer did the same with two outs to make it 6-2. An error in the bottom of the six added another run to the Storm's lead.

Clarkson's offense began to click in the final three frames, scoring five runs in the last three at bats. Robert Whalen scored in the seventh, stealing third and then coming home on a throwing error. In the eighth, Joe Pagano singled home Michael Mieczkowski and Christopher Griggs followed with a sac fly to plate Kyle Locklear, drawing the score closer at 7-5. The Storm responded with two on another double from Bauer in the bottom of the eighth to put the gap back at four runs.

The Knights made things interesting in the top of the ninth, with Grant Price and Caleb Doyle reaching on walks. One batter later, Mieczkowski singled in two runs to get the Knights back within two, but the next hitter eliminated Mieczkowski on a fielder's choice to end the contest.

Caleb Doyle was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored and another driven in and Michael Mieczkowski added a pair of hits and two runs batted in.
