Knights Finish In Middle of Pack at Don Richards Invite

Rochester, NY – Michael Schroeder and Madelyn Nowicki had three top-10 finishes for the Clarkson University Swimming & Diving team on Saturday, as the Golden Knights closed out the Don Richards Invitational, hosted by Rochester Institute of Technology.

The Golden Knights' women finished in fourth place among seven teams with 408 points, trailing host RIT (1017), Skidmore (698), and St. Lawrence (621) and ahead of Mount Holyoke (344), William Smith (223) and Bard (81), while the Knights' men took third of six teams with 540 points, trailing RIT (1576) and Skidmore (664) but well ahead of St. Lawrence (173), Hobart (48), and Bard (25). Clarkson is off for the rest of the semester, and will be back in action in a dual meet against Union College in mid-January.

For the second straight day, both of Clarkson's women's relay teams placed fourth, with the 200 medley relay grouping of Aurelia Leonard, Claudia Scala, Bella Triolet, and Gabriela McSwieney combining for a time of 1:55.26, and Leonard, Ava Lamontagne, Triolet, and McSwieney later producing a 400 freestyle relay time of 3:51.29. Each swimmer also had the top time for the Knights in at least one event. Leonard had the best finish of the day, taking second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.31, and she also took sixth in the 100 butterfly (1:02.05). Bella Triolet had two top-10 finishes, including a fifth-place showing in the 100 butterfly (1:01.25) and a ninth-place finish in the 200 backstroke (2:19.03). Gabriela McSwieney performed well in two freestyle runs, placing seventh in the 200 freestyle (2:02.96) and fourth in the 1650 freestyle (19:03.08). Scala also placed ninth in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.96) and Lamontagne was 13th in the 100 freestyle (58.32).

Madelyn Nowicki had three top-seven finishes for the Knights on Saturday, coming in fifth in the 1650 freestyle (19:06.06), seventh in the 400 individual medley (5:00.37) and also seventh in the 200 butterfly (2:24.22). Sydney Kanner also had the top time in the 200 breaststroke for Clarkson, coming in 16th in 2:47.00. Paige Cutler also came in fifth in the 3-meter dive for the Knights, scoring 212.15 points.

Clarkson's men took third in both relays, as the foursome of Michael Schroeder, Landon Colby, Nicholas Lamy, and Connor Tasselmyer ended their run in the 200 medley relay in 1:39.85, while Colby, Schroeder, Tim Jordan, and Tasselmyer finished off the day with a time of 3:16.77 in the 400 freestyle relay. Several of those swimmers stood out in other individual events. Schroeder had the top showing overall of any Clarkson swimmer, coming in third in the 100 backstroke in 53.81 seconds, and later taking fifth in the 200 butterfly (1:59.77) and sixth in the 200 backstroke (1:57.84). Freshman Landon Colby was also in the top eight twice, taking sixth in the 200 butterfly (2:00.36) and eighth in the 100 butterfly (53.09). Tasselmyer, who set a Clarkson record in the 50 freestyle on Friday, was sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.07) and seventh in the 100 freestyle (48.01). Tim Jordan was Clarkson's best finish in the 200 freestyle, coming in 10th with a time of 1:52.78.

Other standouts for the Clarkson men included Guillermo Barrios, who was fifth in the 400 individual medley (4:36.47) and seventh in the 1650 freestyle (17:41.50). Bradley Beall had the best showing for the Knights in the 200 breaststroke (2:29.01) and Max Lempert came in sixth in the 1-meter dive with 279.55 points.
