The two teams that met in the Liberty League Championship game two years ago will face one another in the playoffs once again on Wednesday, but this time the Clarkson University Baseball and team and University of Rochester will be playing each other in one of two Liberty League Semifinal games, with the winners playing for the conference title on Saturday.

Unlike most years, the conference tournament was turned into a single elimination affair, with top seeded Rochester hosting Clarkson and Ithaca heading to Union for the two semifinal games. In all previous seasons, dating back to the first conference tournament in 2003, the championships were a single-site double elimination tournament held over the course of three days.

The Series: Rochester and Clarkson are familiar foes when it comes to Liberty League playoff meetings, with the most recent matchups occurring in 2019 when the two teams met three times. Clarkson won the first game of the winners' bracket that year, 16-9, but Rochester defended its home turn in the championship round, winning 8-7 to stay alive and then taking the next game 8-2 for the tournament title. This year the two teams split the series 2-2, with the away team winning the doubleheader's opening game on the home team's field first.

Key Stats for Clarkson (14-15-1, 8-7-1 Liberty League): Other than the first game of the set against Rochester, the Clarkson offense was rolling against the Yellowjackets, hitting nine home runs and scoring 28 overall. Junior Zachary Carpin was particularly effective, going 5-for-14 with three home runs and a pair of doubles, while sophomore Colby Brouillette drove in eight thanks to two doubles and two homers. Senior Michael Mieczkowski leads the team on offense with a .380/.469/.463 slash line and leadoff hitter and sophomore Kent Wilson isn't far behind at .376/.436/.538, as he is tied for conference lead in hits with 44. Already a formidable offense, the Golden Knights got catcher Mike Nee back this past week and it was almost as if the junior had never missed a game, as he was 5-for-11 with a pair of doubles in four games.

Key Stats for Rochester (22-8, 16-2 Liberty League): Clarkson was the only team to beat Rochester in league play this year, but the Yellowjackets slugged Golden Knight pitching to the tune of a .470/.520/.752 slash line in the four-game set, thanks in large part to winning a 25-8 slugfest in the fourth game of the series, one in which Rochester recorded 31 hits. John Moses went 8-for-11 (.727/.727/1.182) in the series with five doubles and Aaron Whitley was 8-for-15 (.533/.579/.867), scoring four times with seven more runs batted in. That pair leads the Rochester offense this year as Moses is currently the top hitter in the conference at .449 and Whitley narrowly trailing him at .444. Whitley also has 24 extra-base hits and 25 stolen bases. The one pitcher to excel in the series between Clarkson and Rochester was Jon Turk. The senior lefty struck out seven and allowed only five hits in his complete game win over the Knights and is 3-0 with a 1.42 WHIP in 33 innings this year.
