Clarkson Honors Elizabeth Giguere

10/30/2020 1:26:00 AM

During Clarkson's fifth annual Athletics Giving Day on October 28, the University held an on-campus ceremony to honor Golden Knights women's hockey player Elizabeth Giguere.

Winner of the 2020 Patty Kazmaier Award as the best player in women's college hockey, Giguere was going to be recognized at the women's Frozen Four in Boston at a ceremony that was to take place on March 21, but the COVID-19 pandemic caused a cancellation of the season the day before the NCAA Tournament was scheduled to begin.

Giguere, a native of Quebec City, Quebec, led the nation last year with 37 goals and finished with 66 points overall. The right wing enters her senior year three points behind her former linemate Loren Gabel's career school record of 213. The third Golden Knight to win the Patty Kazmaier Award, Giguere joins Gabel '19 and Jamie Lee Rattray '14 on the prestigious list of the best women's college hockey players of all-time.

"In kind of a dark period for the world, what more could we ask for than to celebrate a Golden Knight?" said Clarkson president Tony Collins to open Wednesday's on-campus ceremony. "Elizabeth Giguere, I think represents the institution not only athletically and academically, but kind of heart and soul, and her personality is what I think we should be talking about today."

Giguere thanked the school administration, coaches, her family and her teammates as she read from her acceptance speech.

"Thank you for always pushing me through everything we do," Giguere said to her teammates, who were in attendance. "Last year we had maybe a tough year where we had to go through things, but we didn't stop. I'm really proud of us. While this award is an individual one, it is symbolic of the team and the university around me. I'd also like thank my classmates here on campus. These aren't normal times, but we all have done our parts to stay safe and keep this campus going strong. I'm proud to be a Clarkson student."
