CU Men's Lacrosse Preview - vs. Rensselaer (4/21)

Six members of the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team will play possibly the final home game of their collegiate careers on Saturday and will simultaneously try to help the Golden Knights clinch a playoff spot when the Green and Gold host Rensselaer at 1:00 pm on Saturday at Hantz Turf Field.

The Series: Only St. Lawrence has played more games against the Golden Knights than Rensselaer since the program began in 1960. The two teams have met 54 times prior to this season, with the Engineers winning 30 games against Clarkson's 24 victories. However, the Knights have held the upper hand as of late with five wins in the last seven games, including a 15-11 victory during the 2017 season.

Key Stats for Clarkson (6-6, 3-3 Liberty League): Sophomore Ryan Gabriel has been nearly unbeatable on faceoffs lately, winning 81.6% (62-for-76) of his draws in the last four games. Only on two occasions in 12 games so far has Gabriel not gotten the better of the opposition on draws, and his rate of success has steadily increased during the season as he boasts a 65.5% winning percentage with 71 groundballs. In last season's win against the Engineers, Gabriel went 18-for-30 on faceoffs and scooped up six groundballs. Shane Kilday also performed well during that contest, scoring three points on two goals and an assist while adding in three groundballs.

Key Stats for Rensselaer (11-2, 5-1 Liberty League): Ranked 17th in the latest USILA Division III poll, the Engineers are succeeding thanks to the second-highest scoring offense in the Liberty League, averaging 13.85 goals per game. Three players rank in the top five in the Liberty League in scoring, led by Zach Lucas (4.40 ppg, 28-16-44). Cliff Kiger (3.92 ppg, 31-16-47) and JT Kelly (3.67 ppg, 15-29-44) have contributed considerably to the team's offense, but it is Lucas that has been particularly strong of late. The senior missed three games in March, but over his past six contests he has recorded 26 points on 17 goals and nine assists. The Engineers also hold the top penalty kill in the conference, erasing 48.6% of man-up chances for the opposition.
