Knights Tie Fredonia in Rain-Shortened Contest

Clermont, FL – Lightning and rain could not have come at a less opportune time for the Clarkson University Softball team as a two-run bottom of the sixth inning was nullified by the storm, dropping the Knights back to a 3-3 tie against Fredonia on Tuesday afternoon.

Per NCAA rules, when an incomplete inning is stopped by darkness or weather the game reverts back to the last completed inning. Clarkson's game against Thomas College later in the day was also washed out.

Fredonia scored runs in both the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead, but the Knights rallied with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Cassie Herman plated Katie Yudin in the first with a double and Alyssa Piniewski singled home Lauren Pixley in the second to give the Devils a 2-0 advantage, but Summer Lancette drove home Kyrstin Messier and Hannah Bowen with a two-run double in the bottom half of the second to knot things up at 2-2.

In the top of the third, Fredonia reclaimed the lead on a Pixley sacrifice fly, but Clarkson responded with what proved to be a key run in the bottom of the fifth. Kat Plescow singled home Bridget Woolley to tie the game in the fifth and without that run, the game would have ended in a loss for the Knights instead of a rare tie.

Clarkson scored twice in the bottom of the sixth before the game was called, with Danielle Whitham coming home on an error following a Lancette single, and Lancette circled the bases on a fielder's choice by Michele Winn. Hannah Isaacson then walked to put runners on first and second, but with two outs and a 2-2 count against Karlie Neuhausser, the game was halted, removing Clarkson's two sixth-inning runs.
