CU Men's Lacrosse Preview - vs. Vassar College (4/8)

For 15 years any game for the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team against Vassar College was pretty much a guaranteed win. However, last year the Brewers surprised the Golden Knights and now the two teams will be in for a tussle on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights enter the game with a record of 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the Liberty League, while Vassar is 8-2 and 1-1. The Brewers beat Clarkson 10-9 last year, though the previous 15 meetings saw the Knights outscore Vassar 200-77 in numerous lopsided wins, including 12 games where the Green and Gold more than doubled up their opponent. While Clarkson is improved from last year, having knocked off fifth-ranked RIT two weeks ago, Vassar has held its own against ranked opponents, topping 19th-rated Rensselaer last Saturday.

Clarkson ran into a hot goalkeeper last weekend against Union as they went more than 37 minutes without a goal despite outshooting the Dutchmen. Even with that drought, Clarkson still has a number of high octane offensive players that can put up points quickly. Senior Ryan DaRin leads the team with 29 points on 27 goals and a pair of assists, while classmate Ryan St. Croix has 21 points on 16 goals and five assists. Fellow seniors Kyle Brown (11-4-15) and Scott Dosser (4-8-12) have also contributed, as has first-year collegian Conor Bartlett, who leads the team with 11 assists and ranks in a tie for second on the squad with 21 points.

Seniors Mark Uhlig and Marc Simmons have each scooped up 22 groundballs, and freshman Ryan Gabriel has matched that figure, with a good number coming off his .569 winning percentage on challenges at the 'x.' Justin Gibson has led a strong Clarkson defensive corps with 13 groundballs and 11 caused turnovers, and senior Nick Strandholm is among the conference leaders with a 8.35 goals against average and .585 save percentage.

Vassar has already matched the program's record for wins (set last season) and can thank its goalkeepers and defenders for the turn-around. Matt Boyd has played about 65 percent of the minutes in the Brewers' crease and has a 6.15 goals against average and .615 save percentage, while Erik Mikelinich hasn't been nearly equal to the task in his relief duties with a 8.29 goals against average. Eric Prezioso and Gianni Gelormino have forced 13 and 10 turnovers, respectively, while Gelormino and TK Murphy have each produced 24 groundballs. Matthew Lowery is easily the team leader in that category with 55 groundballs thanks to a 102-for-147 rate on faceoffs. The Brewers have also produced a well-rounded offense as six players have reached double figures in goals, but no player has more than 14. Liam Moriarty leads the team in points (11-17-28) and is closely followed by Sam Houston-Read (12-14-26) while Michael Mullen joins them in the top three (14-7-21). Chris Billups (11 goals), Brandon DeStasio (10 goals) and James Thomas (10 goals) have also pushed the Vassar offense to 9.8 goals per game.
