CU Men's Lacrosse Preview - at Rensselaer (4/29)

It's a simple formula for the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team this weekend: win and you're in the Liberty League playoffs. However, that formula is exactly the same for the Golden Knights' opponent, Rensselaer, as both teams are playing for their playoff lives on Saturday.

The Golden Knights come into the game with a record of 8-5 overall and 3-3 in the Liberty League, taking out Skidmore on Saturday to keep the playoff hopes alive. Rensselaer is 10-4 overall and 3-3 in the conference as well, having dropped a decision to St. Lawrence. Clarkson is 23-30 all-time against the Engineers and have lost two of the last three against RPI.

Senior Ryan DaRin was chosen as the Liberty League and ECAC North Offensive Performer of the Week for his two-game showing last week, scoring more than 25% of his points on the season in those contests. He ranks second in the league in goals per game and has 38 on the season to go along with nine assists for 47 points. Freshman Conor Bartlett is among the conference's leaders in assists, with his 21 helpers pushing his point total to 36, two ahead of senior Ryan St. Croix's 34 points (26 goals, 8 assists). Classmate Kyle Brown has also excelled in his senior year with 28 points, scoring 22 goals with six assists. Freshman Ryan Gabriel has done well on faceoffs all season and also earned Liberty League and ECAC North Rookie of the Week honors for his performance last week. Overall, Gabriel leads the team with 54 groundballs and has a .601 winning percentage on faceoffs. Mark Uhlig (40 groundballs) and Marc Simmons (33 groundballs) rank among the team leaders on groundballs while Justin Gibson leads the defense with 16 caused turnovers. Nick Strandholm has an 8.96 goals against average and a .553 save percentage. Clarkson also owns the best penalty-kill percentage in the league, giving up just nine goals in 56 tries while playing a man-down.

Clarkson's man-down defense will be put to the test against Rensselaer, as the Engineers have the best man-up offense in the conference with 25 goals in 60 opportunities. A big reason for that success is Breanainn McNeally, who leads the conference in points per game (4.86) with 44 goals and 24 assists for 68 points. JT Kelly (17-26-43), Zach Lucas (24-18-42), Owen Putman (18-11-29) and Matthew Gilman (16-8-24) are also strong contributors to the RPI offense. The Engineers also have a solid and active defensive corps as Tom Feenstra (49 groundballs, 14 caused turnovers), Quinn Fettig (46 groundballs, 10 caused turnovers) and Peter Adorno (24 groundballs, 21 caused turnovers) have denied opponents the ball on a regular basis. Oliver Kaija leads the team with 50 groundballs, most coming on faceoffs (132-for-249) and Davis Gibbs backbones the defense with a 9.14 goals against average and .557 save percentage in the Engineers' crease.
