CU Men's Lacrosse Preview - vs. Cortland State (4/20)

Following its first win in a month, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse hopes that it can create some momentum into the final stretch of the season when the team travels to take on Cortland State on Wednesday.

The Golden Knights are 3-9 overall and 1-4 in the Liberty League, while the Red Dragons, traditionally one of the top teams in the country, are scuffling a little at 7-5. Clarkson is 4-18 all-time against Cortland, last winning during the 1994 season. The two teams have also faced one another twice in the NCAA Tournament (2002, 2004).

Junior Ryan St. Croix became the latest Clarkson player to surpass the 100-point mark in his career and leads the team with 26 goals, while ranking second in points with 31. He trails only classmate Ryan DaRin in points, as the junior attacker has now produced 35 points (23 goals, 12 assists) in 12 games. Sophomore Sam Groves had his best day as a collegian this past Saturday when he produced five points on four goals and an assist and he is third on the team in points (13-11-24) while senior J.R. Campbell also had a big day against Bard and is up to 21 points (10 goals, 11 assists) on the season.

Defensively, Marc Simmons and Austin Case are tied for the lead in groundballs with 31 while Keith Mierzwa is third with 29 groundballs and a Clarkson-best 21 caused turnovers.

While Cortland may be down a little this year, most of its losses have come against nationally-ranked teams. The Red Dragons success has come with a very successful draw as Pat Baldwin has won 64.8% (160-for-247) of his face offs and collected 100 groundballs so far. That dominance at the 'X' has provided Cortland with plenty of options on the ensuing offensive possessions with five players having scored 14 goals or more. Zach Hopps leads the way with a team-best 39 points on 26 goals and 13 assists and Nate Beresovoy isn't far behind with 33 points on 22 goals and 11 assists. Devin Phelps has produced 29 points and 25 groundballs, while Joey Panariello and T.J. deLyra have each scored 14 times. Joe Scalise has seen the majority of the time in the Cortland crease, stopping 53.8% of the shots he faced and allowing 9.89 goals per game.
