Clarkson Hosts RIT in Midweek Doubleheader

Following two weeks without games because of the weather, the Clarkson University Baseball team returned to the field last weekend and did not miss a beat as they took three out of four games from Union. They will look to make up some games that weather had initially postponed when they host RIT for a doubleheader on Wednesday at 1:00 pm on Jack Phillips Stadium at Snell Field.

Clarkson has a 13-2 overall record and is 7-1 in Liberty League games while RIT is 12-4 overall and is 6- in conference play.

On Saturday, the Golden Knights won both ends of a doubleheader on two walk-off wins. It was the first time that Clarkson has won both games of a doubleheader on walk-offs since 2004. Clarkson won the first game on Sunday by a score of 4-1 to ensure they won the weekend series, but Union won the final game of the weekend 8-1 to snap Clarkson's eight game winning streak as well as giving the Green and Gold their first conference loss of the season.

Senior John Coleman struck out in his first at bat of the second game on Saturday, his first strike out of the year and the first in 54 at bats. However, that was one of the few times Union was able to retire Clarkson's leading hitter as Coleman went 7 for 10 over the four games with three walks and three runs scored. Coleman now has a .563 batting average and a .632 on-base percentage, both of which are tops in the Liberty League. Sophomore Dom Pirro also had a big weekend at the plate, as his second home run of the year won the second game on Saturday as well as moving him into the top ten in home runs in the Liberty League. Pirro's 18 RBIs lead the team and his .473 slugging percentage trails only Coleman among Clarkson hitters.

The best pitching performance of the weekend belonged to freshman Will Coleman who pitched his first collegiate complete game on Sunday, allowing only three hits and one run in seven innings of work. His performance earned him the Liberty League Rookie of the Week for the third time this season. Coleman's 1.71 earned run average trails only juniors Greg Jasek and Joe Rooney among Clarkson starting pitchers. Jasek's 1.50 ERA is the best rate in the Liberty League and while Rooney also has a 1.50 ERA, he is two innings away from being eligible for the league crown.

RIT took three of four games from Vassar last weekend to improve their conference record to 6-1. Will Gorman leads the Tigers with a .439 batting average and his .772 slugging percentage is second best in the Liberty League. Rory Little and Ethan Humbert have been the two best pitchers for RIT, with their 2.25 and 2.35 ERAs respectively placing the pair in the top ten. Humbert is fourth in opposing batting average and only Will Coleman has allowed less hits than Humbert's 15. RIT also is second in the Liberty League in batting average and ERA and is third in fielding percentage.
