Clarkson Falls to Second-Ranked RIT

Box Score
In the first Liberty League conference game of the season, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team fell to second-ranked RIT 16-7 on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

Clarkson falls to 2-3 on the season and 0-1 in conference games while the Tigers are 7-0 and hold a 1-0 Liberty League record.

The Tigers would strike first, scoring two goals in the first five minutes. Sophomore Ryan DaRin (Manlius, NY) scored at 9:30 off a pass from sophomore Ryan St. Croix (Camillus, NY) to draw the Golden Knights within a goal, but the Tigers would score four of the next five goals to take a 6-2 lead at the end of the third period. The lone Clarkson goal in that span was scored by freshman Matthew Milne (Camillus, NY) off an assist from DaRin.

St. Croix would score the first goal of the second quarter to make the score 6-3, but RIT scored three straight goals to open up a 9-3 lead with two minutes left in the half. St. Croix scored with 1:14 left in the period, but the defending league champions snagged a tenth goal with ten seconds left in the half to take a 10-4 lead into the break.

After giving up the first goal of the second half, Clarkson fought back to get within four goals of RIT. Freshman Sam Groves (Milton, NY) scored two quick man-up goals, both being assisted by senior Corey Herrington (Camillus, NY) to make the score 11-6 and then DaRin scored his second goal of the game to make the score 11-7.

However, that would be the last time Clarkson found the back of the net as RIT scored the last goal of the third period and four in the fourth quarter to finish the scoring at 16-7.

Sophomore goalkeeper Nick Strandholm (Happy Valley, OR) had a career high 21 saves for the Golden Knights, who were outshot 49-28. RIT held a 16-11 advantage at the faceoff circle and both teams were able to complete 16 of 19 clears.

Clarkson will return to action when they host nationally ranked Cortland State on Wednesday at Hantz Turf Field.
