Roma Shuts Down Tigers as Knights Split with RIT

Pete Roma allowed only one run as the Knights defeated the Tigers 4-1 in game two on Sunday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ROCHESTER, N. Y. – Senior Pete Roma (Endicott, NY) hurled nine innings and allowed only one run in game two as the Clarkson University Baseball team managed a split against the RIT Tigers, losing game one 4-3 before winning the nightcap 4-1.

The Golden Knights now stand at 15-11 overall with a 10-7 mark in the Liberty League. RIT is 16-12 overall and 11-7 in league play. Clarkson will wrap up the regular season when they host Skidmore for four games next weekend.

Roma scattered seven hits over nine innings, holding the Tigers in check throughout the game. RIT scored first in the top of the third inning by way of an RBI single, but that would be the only blemish on Roma's afternoon. The Knights would tie the game in the bottom of the fourth when junior Matt Jenack (Massena, NY) lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score freshman Chris Miller (Ballston Lake, NY). Senior David Wixted (Ballston Lake, NY) would give Clarkson the lead for good when he scored on a wild pitch in the seventh inning. Miller would then single through the right side to score junior John Coleman (Potsdam, NY) to stretch the Clarkson lead to 3-1. Sophomore Anthony Padrazo (Setaucket, NY) would put the Knights ahead 4-1 in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single, and Roma would induce three groundouts to the right side in the ninth to put the Tigers away. Every member of the starting nine for the Knights had at least one hit and Roma did not record a strikeout, getting 12 fly-outs and 12 groundouts to improve to 2-3 on the season.

Senior Dan Lenney (Clifton Park, NY) led the way for the Knights in game one with three singles, and he came around to score two of Clarkson's three runs. Senior Jarrod Mattingly (Philadelphia, NY) started for the Green and Gold on the mound, pitching six innings and allowing eight hits and four runs, three of which were earned. The Tigers got on the board first when Will Gorman hit a solo home run to right center to give RIT the lead in the top of the second inning. Clarkson answered in the bottom of the frame when Jenack singled to right to score Lenney and tie the game at 1-1.

RIT would regain the lead in the top of the third inning as multiple throwing errors allowed the Tigers to plate the go-ahead run. An RBI single in the fifth inning would stretch their lead to 3-1, and another throwing error would give the Tigers a 4-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth. Lenney would get the rally going with a one-out single and junior Nolan Driscoll (Troy, NY) would double to give Clarkson runners on second and third with just one away.  A fielding error at third base would plate both runners to cut the RIT lead to 4-3, but the Knights could not do any more damage in the last two innings.  Rory Little earned the win for the Tigers while Mattingly drops to 4-2 on the season. Tyler Leicthenberger recorded the final five outs for the Tigers to earn the save.
