Knights See Four-Game Win Streak Snapped at Top-Ranked RIT

Rochester, NY - A 10-goal run in the third period by the top-ranked RIT Tigers was too much to overcome for the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team and the Golden Knights saw their four-game winning streak come to a halt in an 18-8 loss in the Liberty League opener on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in conference games while the Tigers moved to 7-0 and 1-0. Clarkson will play home games this coming week against Plattsburgh State and conference foe Rensselaer.

Clarkson and RIT were knotted up at 3-3 in the final minute of the first quarter when Mark Nortz (Lowville, NY) tallied with 56 secones left in the period, but Kyle Aquin and Cory Ashmore each scored in the final 19 seconds, beginning a run of scores by RIT that would not be halted for good until late in the third quarter. RIT scored three goals in the second for an 8-3 edge at halftime, but it was the third quarter that saw the Tigers put the game away.

Allister Warren scored at the 13:27 mark in the third for RIT which started a 10-1 run over the next 6:34, finished off by three straight goals by Casey Jackson, giving the Tigers an 18-4 edge. Clarkson scored the final four goals of the contest, with three coming from the stick of Ryan Darin (Manlius, NY) and another from Matt Gold (Pittsford, NY).

Though the score was lopsided, the majority of other statistics were even. RIT out shot the Knights 41-40, and Clarkson held a 31-29 edge in shots on goal. Clarkson also had a 34-22 advantage in groundballs, but the Tigerse controlled the faceoff "x" by winning 24 of the 30 draws.

Darin led Clarkson with four goals and Gold added a pair of scores. Ryan St. Croix (Jamesville, NY) had a goal and Nortz had a goal and two assists. Peter Goss (Jamesville, NY) led the Knights with five groundballs while Corey Herrington (Camillus, NY) and Rick Clement (Cotuit, MA) each had three groundball pick ups. In goal, Harrison Washuta (Maple Grove, MN) made five stops and Nick Strandholm (Happy Valley, OR) chipped in six saves.

For RIT, Kyle Quin had three goals and three assists and Casey jackson added three scores. Allister Warren had two goals and three assists and JD Hall chipped in two goals. Pat Johnston made 14 saves as the starter in goal for RIT, and Jarryd Lee made nine stops in relief.
