Clarkson Comes Up Short Against Nazareth

Ryan Cole made 16 saves against Nazareth
Onondaga, NY – Senior Ryan Cole (Orchard Park, NY) made 16 saves, including 10 in the first half, but the Clarkson University Men’s Lacrosse team came up short in its bid for victory, falling short against Nazareth, 10-7, in non-league action at Onondaga Community College.

The Golden Knights fell to 1-1 on the season and will host their first home game of the season on Saturday when the team takes on Brockport at Hantz Turf Field. Nazareth also saw its record evened at 2-2.

Nazareth started off the game with numerous shots, but the majority of them went wide, before Clarkson had its first chance of the Golden Flyers. Despite the edge by Nazareth, it was Clarkson that would come away with the lead in the early going, thanks to sophomore Corey Herrington (Camillus, NY). Set up behind the goal, Herrington found classmate Matt Gold (Pittsford, NY) and senior Peter Goss (Jamesville, NY) in close to get the Knights a pair of goals midway through the period. Nazareth added a score and Herrington set up Goss again near the end of the first frame to give the Knights a 3-1 edge.

Nazareth’s Jason Boike scored a pair of goals early in the second period to tie the score up at 3-3, and the two teams tussled back and forth for the remainder of the period, with each tallying a score, making it 4-4 at the half.

In the second half, Cole continued to make some impressive saves for the Knights, but Clarkson was unable to get him any breathing room on the scoreboard. Nazareth picked up a goal midway through the third, and Clarkson tied it up three minutes later with Herrington converting in front on a pass from Matt McCabe (Syracuse, NY). The Golden Flyers managed their first two-goal advantage of the game early in the fourth quarter as they started to get some open shots in front of the net. The momentum would be brief, however, as a broken play allowed the Knights pull back to within one. Jeff Sciera (DeWitt, NY) flipped the ball up to Goss, who then ran in virtually unopposed to cut the lead back down to one. The two teams once again traded goals and Clarkson was within one, but Nazareth produced a pair of goals in the final 66 seconds to gain a 10-7 edge.

Cole was dominant in net, allowing four goals in the fourth quarter on close shots, but denying all others. Equally impressive for the Golden Flyers was Scott Brown, who made 15 saves, with the majority of his coming in the second half when the Knights were attempting to complete their comeback bid.

For Clarkson, Peter Goss had three goals while Corey Herrington added a pair of goals and two assists. Jeff Sciera had a goal and an assist, and Matt Gold also scored once. For Nazareth, Trevor Haefele, Nick Lascalzo and Jason Boike each scored a pair of goals.

Nazareth held a 41-37 edge in shots, but the Golden Flyers were much more cautious in the second half and came out more productive, scoring six times on 15 total shots. The Knights actually went the other way after scoring four times on its first 12 shots, tallying only three times in the final 25 attempts.
