Troy, NY - Trailing by two early in the fourth quarter, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse offense scored four straight goals in a span of just six minutes while maintaining its tight defensive effort as the Golden Knights claimed a 8-7 victory over Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 5-3 overall, ending a short two-game losing streak, and 1-1 in the Liberty League, while Rensselaer fell to 5-4 overall and 1-1. Clarkson will play a non-league contest at home on Wednesday against Oswego State at Hantz Turf Field.

Entering the fourth period, Clarkson trailed 4-3 after a defensive-minded first half saw only three goals scored between the two teams. However, that would change on the opening faceoff as sophomore Dylan Broomfield (Clinton, NY) won the draw, picked up the groundball, and raced down to score his first goal of the year in just seven seconds. The Engineers responded with a pair of goals to regain a two-goal advantage, 6-4, at the 11:44 mark. Sophomore Robert Linder (Marcellus, NY) tallied his first goal of the year at the 9:15 mark, making the score 6-5 and sparking a run of four straight goals by the Golden Knights. Senior Brendon Shearin (Goffstown, NH) scored a pair of goals 70 seconds apart to give the Knights the lead, and sophomore Corey Herrington (Camillus, NY) added his second goal of the game with three minutes to go for a two-goal Clarkson lead. The Engineers pulled back within at the 1:55 mark, but RPI had just one more shot in the final minutes and that attempt was wide. Clarkson had a pair of clears in the final two minutes to end the game.

Shearin scored three times to lead the Golden Knights, while Herrington added three points on two goals and an assist. Junior Peter Goss (Jamesville, NY) also added a goal and an assist as well as four groundballs. Linder and Broomfield also scored a goal, with Broomfield picking up eight groundballs and winning 13 of the 19 faceoffs.

Senior Ryan Cole (Orchard Park, NY) made 11 saves on 18 shots to earn his fifth victory of the season, while RPI's James Manchester made six saves. Rensselaer had a 31-25 edge in shots, but the Knights held advantages in groundballs (33-32) and faceoffs won (13-6).
