Kinney Sets More Records, But Knights Drop Pair at RIT

Rochester, NY - Senior David Kinney (Mexico, NY) added two more records to his slate, but the Clarkson University Baseball team dropped a pair of key games to the Rochester Institute of Technology, falling in the first game 5-4 and in the second contest 12-10 Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell below .500 overall at 13-14 and dropped to 7-11 in the Liberty League with at most 10 conference games remaining. RIT improved to 12-17 and 7-11 in the Liberty League. The two teams are scheduled to play again on Saturday.

In the opener, RIT scored an unearned run in the second inning before Clarkson was able to pick up a run in the top of the third inning as Kinney hit a bloop single to score John Coleman (Potsdam, NY). The Tigers scored another run in the fourth to regain the lead, but once again Clarkson responded, taking the lead in the top of the fifth with two runs. Kinney doubled in a run, and David Wixted (Ballston Lake, NY) had an RBI-groundout. In the sixth, Clarkson added another run with a single from Dan Lenney (Clifton Park, NY), giving the Knights a 4-2 edge. However, the Tigers knotted up the game in the bottom of the sixth and finished off the game with a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh, sending Clarkson to its third walk-off loss in league play this season.

In the second game, both starters were chased early as the teams combined for 11 runs in the first two frames. The score was tied 9-9 through four innings, but it was the Tigers who won the last five innings, outscoring the Knights by two runs with a pair in the sixth.

Kinney went 3-for-5 with three doubles and three RBIs, accomplishing a number of feats in the process. He became only the third player in Clarkson history to surpass 100 career RBIs, and his strong performance in the second game had him break Clarkson's career doubles mark (47) and career hits mark (179).

David Wixted hit his first home run of the season in the second game and was 2-for-5, while John Coleman had a strong day overall, going 7-for-9 with four runs scored, two RBIs, and a pair of stolen bases.
