A modest two-game winning streak came to an end for the Clarkson University Women’s Soccer team on Saturday afternoon when visiting Rochester Institute of Technology scored two late goals to pull out a 2-0 Liberty League victory on Clarkson Grass Field.
The Golden Knights, who stand at 7-3 overall and 1-3 in the Liberty League, open a three-game road trip at conference rival Rensselaer this coming Friday.
Scoreless through the first 80 minutes, RIT (5-7, 3-3), tallied twice in less than three minutes to snap a two-game losing skid. Alexa Martinez broke the scoreless tie with her first goal of the season in the 83rd minute when her shot from the far right corner of the box deflected off a Clarkson defender and past Golden Knight freshman goaltender Brianna Thibeau (Salem, NY).
In the 86th minute the Tigers sealed the road win when Rachael Bromson connected on a header from the right side of the net after perfect cross from Kasey Dobrodziej.
RIT outshot Clarkson 15-9 and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Knights’ best opportunity to score came in the 70th minute on a penalty kick. Junior Linde Zajac’s (Cicero, NY) shot however, hit off the corner off the crossbar, denying the Green and Gold the go-ahead score.
Thibeau posted fives saves in the Clarkson goal, while Ashley Valenti made five stops for the Tigers.
