Butler Scores Game-Winner Late to Lift Knights Over RPI, 3-2

Potsdam, NY – A late score from Brooke Butler, playing her first game in nearly a month, allowed the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team to gain a 3-2 win over Rensselaer in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights moved to 8-5-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the Liberty League, picking up some much needed points in the conference standings. RPI's defeat saw the Engineers fall to 4-4-5 and 0-4-1 in league play.

It took little time for either team to get on the scoreboard in the first half and quality chances were frequent from the start. Elsa Ryan put a shot on goal in the first two minutes, forcing Clarkson goalkeeper Emma Fleming to make a save that required her full reach to get a hand on the ball. From that point on, the Knights had a decided advantage in shots, though it was the Engineers that would get on the scoreboard first.

Isabelle Gelzhiser sent a long pass through traffic near midfield to find Elsa Ryan above the top of the box. Ryan then held the ball back after just getting inside the penalty area and drawing the goalie out, hitting a simple pop up shot over top of the Clarkson defense and into the back of the net at 9:25.

Clarkson responded with a goal at the other end less than six minutes later thanks to a handball in the box. The Knights took a shot and before it was able to get to the RPI keeper, it appeared to deflect off the forearm of an Engineers defender, creating the penalty kick opportunity. Jamie Dahlgard was selected for the chance and while Ava Gaboury guessed right, her frame wasn't long enough to reach for the post, as Dahlgard's shot tipped in off the inner half and over the line at 15:06.

The offense continued with another score only 11 minutes later when the Knights added to their total. Ella Intrieri had the ball deep in the RPI end and chose to go to the end line, putting a cross back into the box with her left foot. Thea Armistead got a foot on it as well, tipping the ball through further traffic for Dahlgard, where she finished with her left, going towards the right post at 24:50.

RPI came right back barely five minutes after Clarkson's second score to tie the game up at 2-2. The Knights were whistled for a foul on the right side line, giving the Engineers a direct kick. Though that kick was put into the box and touched up by Fleming, she was unable to catch the ball clean. The ball rolled straight to Elsa Ryan, where she was able to finish off the play from about 15-yards out at 30:29.

In the second half, RPI nearly picked up a third goal early on when Maddy Kaminski broke through for a 1-on-1 with Fleming. The Clarkson goalkeeper came all the way out to the top of the box to close out the angle when Kaminski had played the ball forward and she stopped a blast at 47:31 that momentarily shook her up and Kaminski's rebound attempt went high and wide of the net.

About 12 minutes later, Clarkson had a number of corner kick opportunities, but none of those produced much in the way of shots except for a few caroms here and there that were kept out of the goal. A few moments later, RPI had an excellent chance of its own, but again Fleming was able to make a diving same to keep the game tied 2-2.

Clarkson scored the game-winner late in the contest when Ella Intrieri and Jamie Dahlgard combined to create a turnover on the right side line in the RPI defensive zone. Intrieri created the initial contact and Dahlgard picked up the loose ball, sending a pass to Intrieri further down the side line. She awaited her team to crash the net and sent a cross close to the six, finding Brooke Butler, who followed with a volley off her right leg and into the corner with less than seven minutes remaining in the contest.

Clarkson finished with a 15-7 advantage in shots and a narrower 8-5 lead in shots on goal while also having six corner kicks to RPI's four. Fleming picked up three saves and Ava Gaboury had five saves for RPI.
