A modest winning streak came to an end at two games for the Clarkson University Lacrosse team as the Golden Knights were shut down on Saturday, losing 8-2 in Liberty League action against Rensselaer in Troy, NY.
In a tight defensive game, Rensselaer (9-1, 4-0) controlled from the start, holding a 3-0 lead at the half and a 5-0 advantage after 45 minutes. The Engineers built their lead to 8-0 midway through the fourth quarter.
Freshman Matt McCabe (Syracuse, NY) and junior Mitch Collins (Baldwinsville, NY) tallied unassisted goals for Clarkson in the final three minutes for the Knights’ lone scores in the contest.
Bryant Johnson scored twice for Rensselaer.
The Engineers outshot the Green and Gold 39-17 and owned a 34-27 advantage in groundballs. Freshman Ryan Cole (Orchard Park, NY) posted 10 saves for the Knights. Junior defenseman Mike Perkins (Baldwinsville, NY) picked up a game-high six ground balls and recorded three caused turnovers.
At 2-9 overall and 1-1 in the Liberty League, Clarkson plays at arch-rival St. Lawrence in Canton, NY on Wednesday evening, beginning at 5:00 pm
