Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Knights' Season Ends in ECAC Semifinals in 4-0 Loss to Dartmouth

Lake Placid, NY – Two first period scores and two empty net tallies in the final four minutes was the difference as the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team saw its season come to a close with a 4-0 defeat against ninth-ranked Dartmouth in the ECAC Hockey Semifinals held at Herb Brooks Arena.

The Golden Knights concluded their season with a record of 18-17-3, while Dartmouth improved to 22-7-4. The Big Green will face either Princeton or Cornell for the league title on Saturday.

Clarkson began the game with a strong forecheck that kept Dartmouth unable to find a rhythm offensively. A series of penalties in the first seven minutes allowed Clarkson to take a significant advantage in shots, though each team was on the power play for solid stretches. The Golden Knights were on a 4-on-3 for a bit and then had more opportunities while 5-on-3, but they just could not connect despite some good looks in the slot and around the circles. The best chance of the first 10 minutes came right after Clarkson had killed off a second penalty, but the shot by Mael St Denis clanged off the inside of the post and kept the game scoreless.

Dartmouth got on the scoreboard first, recording a goal seemingly out of nothing. The Big Green did keep the puck in the Clarkson zone for an extended stretch, but much of that possession was without movement as the puck stuck along the left side boards with players fighting for possession. Eventually it squeaked out and a short pass from the left circle found Nathan Morin at the bottom of the circle in front of the crease, where he shot hard and high at 12:26 to make it 1-0.

Only 30 seconds later, Clarkson again hit the post, this time Talon Sigurdson beating Emmett Croteau, but not the right post as play kept rolling along. The missed chance proved to be a blow in terms of momentum as Dartmouth ended up picking up another goal before the period ended. Another simple exchange of passes from tape to tape at the other end of the ice allowed Jack Silverberg to get the puck to Colin Grable near the center ice. Grable walked in and was looking to make another pass, but instead found himself with enough space to take a shot and he wristed a shot from the top of the slot over the stick of Clarkson's Shane Soderwall at 18:13, putting he score at 2-0.

The Knights were able to kill off a third penalty that overlapped the end of the first and the start of the second and then stopped another extra-skater chance late in the frame. Overall, scoring opportunities were limited compared to the first period when the two teams combined for 53 total shots, including 24 on net. The middle 20 minutes saw the two teams combined for just 13 shots on goal (7-6 in favor of Dartmouth) and 33 total (with the margin 19-14 for Clarkson).

Clarkson had chances in the third period thanks to two Dartmouth penalties. During the first of those chances, the Knights put three on goal, but all were denied by Emmett Croteau. The Knights put a pair on goal in the second power play, with one being mishandled by Croteau as it fell out of his glove and into the slot for Ryan Bottrill, but Bottrill's shot went wide of the cage and that was the last shot opportunity while Clarkson was up a skater.

With seven-plus minutes to go, Dartmouth was called for a tripping penalty to give the Knights another chance to climb back into the contest, but Clarkson only had one good look, a shot from Bottrill near the left circle. Shortly after the penalty concluded, the Knights pulled Soderwall for the extra attacker and to keep the pressure on a tired Dartmouth defense. After a timeout, Clarkson won the faceoff in the Dartmouth zone, but a missed pass allowed the puck to find Jack Silverberg in the middle of his own slow, and he sent a straight shot all the way down the ice and into the vacated net at 16:22. Clarkson kept the its goal empty with hopes of a goal, but it was Dartmouth that would pick another empty net goal when Alex Krause was able to score from the neutral zone at 18:15, putting the game away for the Big Green.

Clarkson finished with a 31-26 edge in shots on goal and both teams were scoreless on the power play, with the Knights going 0-for-5 and Darmouth empty at 0-for-4. Soderwall had 22 saves for Clarkson and Croteau had 31 stops for the Big Green.
