Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Knights Shock Quinnipiac with Three Late Third-Period Goals to Advance to Lake Placid

Hamden, CT – Two third-period goals by Quinnipiac seemingly had the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team on the ropes, but the Golden Knights rallied late with two shorthanded goals and then one more while even to upend the seventh-ranked Bobcats 4-3 in game two of the ECAC Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights sweep of Quinnipiac sends the team back to Lake Placid for the second straight season under head coach JF Houle, as the team improved to 18-16-3. The Bobcats, who are certain to receive an at-large bid, fell to 26-9-3.

The unlikely come-from-behind bid came thanks to two shorthanded goals in the first minute of Quinnipiac's power play chance in the final eight minutes of the contest. Once the power play was killed off by the Knights, the Green and Gold recorded one more goal for good measure, deflating the crowd in Hamden.

After being held to a season-low 24 shots on Friday evening, Quinnipiac came out buzzing while also limiting Clarkson's chances by getting sticks in the way of passes before the Knights' offense could develop. The Bobcats ended their scoreless run in the series with a goal late in the first period. Clarkson attempted to clear the puck from behind its net but it was intercepted alongside the left side boards. Ethan Wyttenbach eventually skated down towards the goal line on that side and found Markus Vidicek on the inside portion of the left circle for a one-timer, and Vidicek went to the glove side opposite post at 15:58 to make it 1-0.

For those that feel that officials swallow the whistles in the playoffs, they would be sorely mistaken in the second period when 10 penalties were called, six on the Golden Knights and four on Quinnipiac, though two of those were matching minors. Clarkson was able to take advantage of one of those opportunities, tying the game at 7:32. The Knights briefly were on a 5-on-3, but the Bobcats were able to kill off that 25-second chance off. However the second penalty was where Clarkson would get its goal, tallying with about a minute left when Justin Cote swung hard on a one-timer in the slot, ripping a shot that would turn his body more than 90 degrees on the follow through for his 11th goal of the year. Assists went to Tate Taylor and Ty Brassington.

At the start of the third, Quinnipiac scored twice in a short stretch with both goals coming off the stick of Braden Blace. The first was an impressive display as he was able to knock in the puck off a shot from Chris Pelosi. From the top of the left circle, Pelosi took his shot, but the attempt was denied by Shane Soderwall's leg pad. Blace was skating past the play and had to stop quickly for the rebound, turning quickly and flicking the puck in over the shoulder of Soderwall while he was falling to the ice, making it 2-1 at 3:01. Just 62 seconds later, Blace scored again, this time when a loose puck leaked out to the blue line and his wrist shot simply found some space around the Clarkson defense, putting the score at 3-1 with 4:03 off the clock.

When Clarkson was whistled for another penalty putting Quinnipiac on the power play in the final eight minutes, it appeared as if the Knights were finished, but Clarkson ended up scoring twice while shorthanded. The first was just poor luck for Quinnipiac when Mason Marcellus was near the blue line at the right side and left the puck behind him without even realizing it, allowing Shawn O'Donnell to jump into action and skate hard in the other direction, entirely unimpeded. He took his time and lifted a shot over Dylan Silverstein's stick to make it 3-2 at 12:20.

Only 38 seconds later the Knights again scored while down a skater, this time creating a transition chance with a 2-on-2 which eventually became a 3-on-3. A drop pass to Erik Bargholtz pulled Quinnipiac's defense to the left side of the ice, overcompensating a bit too much as Bargholtz was able to find Matthew Mayich in the slot for a fairly easy shot as Silverstein was not able to recover the distance he had given up in trying to shut down Bargholtz.

Quinnipiac took a timeout to regroup, but it did not slow down the Knights. Once the power play was completed for the Bobcats, Clarkson found the back of the net to take the lead for the first time in the contest. An unassuming 3-on-3 saw Erik Bargholtz carry the puck into the zone and he just threw the puck on net from the top of the slot, picking a low spot and splitting the wickets at 14:21, putting the Bobcats ECAC playoff run in peril.

Quinnipiac pulled its goaltender for the final 2:48, but spent most of its time with an extra attacker trying to keep Clarkson from scoring an empty netter. It wasn't until the last minute that the Bobcats put together much in the way of offense, getting a few one-timers off, but Soderwall and the Clarkson defense did just enough to hold on for the one goal victory.

The Bobcats finished the game with a 74-43 edge in shots and doubled up the Knights in shots on goal (36-18), but Quinnipiac did nothing against Clarkson on the power play, going 0-for-7 while the Knights went 1-for-4 and had the two shorthanded markers. Soderwall finished with 33 saves for the Knights and Silverstein had 14 stops for Quinnipiac.
