Clarner Claims Top Spot at Paul Smiths Invite

Paul Smiths, NY – Cold weather shortened the course on Saturday, but it did not slow down the members of the Clarkson University Nordic Ski team as a number of Golden Knights finished with podium positions at the conclusion of the Paul Smiths Invitational.

Originally scheduled as a 15K Skate, the race was reduced to just one trip around the course instead of two. Clarkson's men had three of the top four finishers in the event, while one of Clarkson's women placed third as well.

On the men's side, sophomore Matthew Clarner won the race by nearly two full minutes with a time of 19:21.4, easily pacing the field of 61 participants. Adam Jansen was the next Clarkson skier to cross the finish line, ending up in third in 21:33.7, while Torsten Brickley rounded out the Golden Knights' team scoring with a fourth-place finish in 21:39.4. It would be more than a minute before another Clarkson skier got in out of the cold, as Braydon Patch placed 15th in 22:53.9. Silas Bartol was next in the 16th spot with a time of 23:02.9 and Nathaniel Burke also ended up in the top 20, taking 20th in 23:14.1.

For Clarkson's women, Skylar Francis closed out the race with a third-place finish among the 65 skiers in that event, crossing the line in 26:54.7, only 46.25 seconds behind the leader. Next for the Knights was Janneke Baks, who came in 43rd in 35:48.0, and then Clare Janas, who took 50th in 37:42.1.
