Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Knights Win Wild One at Cheel, Downing Union 8-7

Potsdam, NY – Fans who appreciate offense had to be delighted with Saturday afternoon's contest between the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team and Union College, as the Golden Knights required overtime to down the Garnet Chargers 8-7 in ECAC Hockey action at Cheel Arena.

The 15 combined goals between the two teams tied for the most ever at Cheel Arena, coincidentally between the Knights and Union back on November 13, 1993. It was also the most combined goals overall since a 10-5 win against Colgate on March 15, 1995.

The 15th score of the game came off the stick of Owen Van Steensel in overtime. Tate Taylor took the puck down near the left circle and waited for the defense to commit, sliding a pass to Ryan Bottrill and when the Union defenders glanced at him it was too late, as he had sent a pass to the opposite side of the crease for Van Steensel with just 1:10 remaining in the extra session.

The win for the Knights helped them improve to 12-15-3 overall and 6-9-3 in ECAC Hockey, while Union fell to 16-10-2 and 6-9-1. Clarkson has next weekend off as the majority of the ECAC will catch up in league games.

The Golden Knights appeared to have taken the offensive momentum built from the final period of Friday night's game into Saturday, scoring three times in the opening period. Clarkson got on the scoreboard at 6:41 with a goal from Jared Mangan off a rebound after Jack Sparkes rifled a slapshot from the right point off a Union defender. The puck fell to Mangan in the slot, and he deposited into the Union goal for a 1-0 early lead.

The Garnet Chargers countered with a goal a little over four minutes later. Shortly after the media timeout concluded, the Knights cleared the Union offensive zone, but it was only for a brief moment as Tyler Dunbar snagged the puck with his hand and dropped it back down to the ice in the neutral zone. That turned into a quick counter for Union, ending in a goal by Parker Lindauer from the bottom of the left circle at 11:00.

Clarkson's second goal of the contest came at the conclusion of a strong penalty kill when Ty Brassington sent a stretch pass from the left circle in the Union zone all the way down to Ryan Bottrill near the opposite blue line. Bottrill patiently waited for his teammates to get up ice and the Union defense overcommitted a bit in the slot, as Brassington filled the lane on the opposite side and went far post at 15:26.

The Knights then added a third goal in the period thanks to a strong forecheck that created a turnover by the Chargers. Remi Gelinas stole the puck near the point and worked his way down towards the right side, biding his time as a Union defender slid past on an attempt to block Gelinas's shot, but the freshman waited for daylight to open and he went to the far post to make it 3-1 at 19:26.

Matching penalties at the end of the first period created a 4-on-4 to start the second period and Union tallied twice with the extra space on the ice. The first came off a backhand pass from the bottom of the circle, finding Colby MacArthur for a shot in the slot at 1:14. The second came only 28 seconds later when Riley Brueck won a puck out of the right corner and scored on a tough angled shot at 1:42, tying the game 3-3.

The two teams traded power play goals before the media timeout, as both offenses kept clicking. Clarkson tallied the first at 5:20 when the Knights had three skaters high working the puck around the perimeter of the zone, eventually finding the stick of Justin Cote, who sniped a shot from the top of the left circle around a screen. The game was tied for a third time on Union's power-play marker in the waning seconds of a 5-on-3 when Ben Muthersbaugh ripped a one-timer from the bottom of the right circle at 8:00.

A relatively quiet stretch occurred for the next nine minutes with the lamps on both ends staying off for a bit. That would end, however, when Gelinas recorded his second goal of the contest. It began innocuously enough on a flip pass off the board from Mael St-Denis. However, that pass sprung a 2-on-1 for Jace Letourneau and Gelinas the other way, with Letourneau sending a pass across the slot for Gelinas, who ripped a forehand one-timer at 17:13 to put the Knights on top once again.

Clarkson regained its two-goal advantage early on in the third period as the freshman class continued to excel. Jace Letourneau picked up a loose puck near the right circle after a failed clear by Union and skated around the net for a wrap-around goal at 2:31. However, that larger lead was brief thanks to Will Felicio scoring roughly 90 seconds later for the Chargers. He took a quick pass from Connor Smith after the pair entered the zone, firing a shot from the top of the left circle at 4:09.

The game was tied for a fourth time shortly after the media timeout in the third as Tyler Dunbar went right up main street from his own end. He started skating short of his own blue line and through the neutral zone, eventually whipping a shot into the net after he was a stride over the Clarkson blue line at 11:48.

Clarkson scored for a seventh time as Luka Sukovic scored for the first time since the first semester, celebrating his goal in style when he wristed a shot in from the left circle at 14:23 in the third. Of course, in such a high-scoring contest, that did not end up being the game-winner as Colby MacArthur sniped one into the top corner at 18:20 to tie the game 7-7 while up an extra skater due to an empty net.

Union closed regulation on the power play, but was unable to score on the 5-on-4 in the final minute or on the 4-on-3 in the opening minute of overtime. The Chargers were also whistled for a penalty in overtime, but Clarkson came up empty on the 4-on-3 before Van Steensel provided the heroics with the teams back even.

Neither team did much on the power play in the game, as Union was 1-for-6 and Clarkson was just 1-for-4. The Chargers had a modest lead in total shots (60-59) and shots on goal (36-33). Keenan Rancier finished with 28 saves for Clarkson while Brayden Gillespie (16) and Brendan Holahan (9) combined for 25 saves for Union.
