Knights Four-Game Win Streak Halted in 2-1 Defeat at Cornell

Ithaca, NY – After an offensive outburst in which the team scored 20 goals in the last four games, the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team was kept relatively quiet against Cornell University, as the Golden Knights dropped a 2-1 decision to close out the regular season at Lynah Rink.

The Golden Knights saw their four-game winning streak come to an end, as well as their four-game streak of scoring at least four goals in a game. The Green and Gold ended the regular season with a record of 15-16-3 overall and 9-10-3 in ECAC Hockey, while Cornell won its 20th game to move to 20-8-1 and 15-6-1. Clarkson will be at home for the first round of the ECAC Hockey playoffs, taking on Rensselaer next Friday at Cheel Arena.

Cornell had the better chances in the first period, with Aiden Long getting open in the slot near the seven-minute mark only to be denied by Clarkson's Shane Soderwall. About five minutes later Cornell's Jake Kraft had a backhand opportunity at the top of the crease, but again Soderwall stood tall to make the denial.

Clarkson began to get some chances with a power play shortly after the media timeout. The Golden Knights spent nearly the entirety of the penalty in the Cornell zone, ripping numerous one-timers at Cornell goaltender Remington Keopple. Many of those shots were deflected away, though Remi Gelinas produced one that challenged Keopple. With one second left in the power play, Gelinas was whistled for a penalty and put the Big Red up a skater, but the Knights kill unit was impressive, spending more time in the Cornell zone than in their own.

At the tail end of the period, Clarkson skated on a 5-on-3 for 36 seconds and spent more than three minutes up a skater. The overlapping stretch from the end of the first and the start of the second saw the Knights come up empty.

It appeared as if Cornell was going to get on the scoreboard first when Michael Fisher eluded a few defenders on the left side and jammed the puck past Soderwall, but the goal was taken off the board after a rather quick review due to the Big Red being offsides. Nevertheless, Cornell still was the first on the scoreboard, as the Big Red found the back of the net while in the latter stages of a power play chance. Cornell was regrouping at its own end when Caton Ryan skated from high slot to high slot, possibly fooling Soderwall with a dump in before taking a simple wrist shot from the edge of the left circle at 10:04, with just 16 seconds left in the power play.

Overall, neither team had much going in the way of offense in the middle period, as the two teams combined for only eight shots on goal, despite the power plays and a 4-on-4. Through the opening two periods, the shots on goal were fairly even, but Clarkson had a 35-21 edge in total shots attempted, though Cornell nullified the figure with 14 blocks.

Cornell got a key insurance goal about five minutes into the third. On a faceoff in the Clarkson zone, the Big Red won it all the way back to the blue line above the left circle. Hoyt Stanley found some space to skate in unimpeded and made his way to the net, flipping his attempt around Soderwall at 5:20.

Clarkson got on the scoreboard near the midway point of the third period thanks to an unassuming set play that caught Cornell napping. Deep in the Clarkson end, Tristan Sarsland dropped a pass off to Ryan Bottrill and immediately went on a sprint up center ice, collecting the long stretch pass from Bottrill near the Cornell blue line and beating the Big Red defenders for a 1-on1 with Keopple, and he beat the Cornell netminder five-hole at 10:03 to make the score 2-1. Bottrill and Talon Sigurdson each earned assists on the play.

The Knights picked up a golden opportunity in the final five minutes when Cornell's Hoyt Stanley was called for a five-minute hit-from-behind and game misconduct, putting Clarkson on a power play for the remainder of regulation. Gelinas had a one-timer stopped early on and an attempt from Sigurdson was also kicked aside with about three minutes to go in the contest. Soderwall was pulled with about 90 seconds left for an extra skater, but he had to go back into the net briefly when an interference call went against the Knights with 40 seconds to go. Clarkson had its chances in the final 25 seconds, but none of their attempts could get past Keopple.

The Knights finished with a 48-32 edge in total shots but had a considerably more narrow lead in shots on goal (21-20). Each team scored once on the power play. Soderwall finished with 19 saves and Keopple matched that figure with 19 saves for himself.
