Sigurdson Scores in Overtime to Give Knights 2-1 Sunday Win Over Vermont

Potsdam, NY – Talon Sigurdson scored at 2:30 in overtime to lift the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team to a 2-1 victory against University of Vermont in a rare Sunday afternoon non-league contest at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights evened their season record to 3-3 while Vermont slipped to 2-3. Clarkson will be on its home ice once again next weekend when it hosts Niagara University in two contests.

The goal from Sigurdson in the extra session came on a 2-on-1 that developed just short of the blue line in the Knights' defensive zone. Ty Brassington pushed the puck forward to Sigurdson along the right wide and he skated up ice with Tyler Wallace in the middle. Sigurdson took a shot from the right circle which was saved, but Wallace was taken down from behind by the Vermont defender, allowing the rebound to settle in front. With Wallace having then knocking into the Vermont goalkeeper Jacob Oster, Sigurdson followed his own shot in the slot and flipped the puck in with a backhand to close out the contest.

Clarkson goalkeeper Ben Gaudreau picked up his first collegiate win and was impressive in his second start with the Knights, making 29 saves, with the only Vermont score coming on the power play late in the game.

The opening period finished with the same results as when the teams played on Friday as neither team was able to put one in the back of the net. Clarkson carried the play for most of the frame, getting a few solid looks in front that were either denied by Jacob Oster or blocked by an incredibly active defensive group of Catamounts. Vermont closed the period on the power play but each of its four shots went wide or were blocked.

After combining for only 11 shots on goal in the first period, that amount was surpassed prior to the media timeout at the midway of the second. Although the shots on net were increased only one made its way through, and it was easily the slowest paced of any. With the puck at the right circle for a faceoff in the Vermont end, the Catamounts won the draw backwards and the puck slid straight towards goalie Oster with barely any pace to it. As Oster tried to use his stick to slide the puck to his glove for an easy cover, it instead took a detour over the goal line at 2:34. Tyler Wallace was credited with the goal for the Golden Knights as the man on the dot.

Vermont had a few chances near the midway point of the second, but Ben Gaudreau made a pair of solid stops showing he is more than capable of going to his left, gloving one on a wide open look once and then making one more with more adept skating that saw him slide to close down the shooting lane.

For a while it looked like the Golden Knights might be heading to their first 1-0 win in five seasons, but a late power play allowed the Catamounts to tie the score with less than four minutes to go. A holding call allowed Vermont to get the man-advantage with just over five minutes remaining. Seventy-five seconds after the call, Michael Hagens took a shot from the top of the left circle that was denied, but the rebound dropped down to the goal line for Cedrick Guindon. He had no angle for another shot and instead slid the puck through the crease to Ethan Burroughs, who was able to knock the puck in on a backhand at 16:02.

Clarkson got a power play opportunity only 34 seconds after the score, and the Knights had opportunities with six total shots, but the best chance came as the penalty expired when Bryce Sookro had a solid look just outside the crease, though Oster and a Vermont defender combined on making the stop and ending the rush.

In the 3-on-3 overtime, a slip provided Vermont with a 2-on-1 opportunity going towards the other end, and Colin Kessler was at the bottom of the slot all by himself, going to his backhand, only to see Ben Gaudreau make an outstanding glove save to keep the game tied. A minute later, the Knights closed out the contest with the game-winner from Sigurdson.

Clarkson ended with a 32-30 lead in shots on goal, though Vermont had a larger total attempts figure (69-61). The Catamounts were 1-for-3 on the power play, their first while up a skater in 2026-27, while the Knights went 0-for-2 on the man advantage. Oster ended with 31 saves for Vermont.
