Clarner Gains Win at Middlebury Invitational

Ripton, VT - Sophomore Matthew Clarner of the Clarkson University Nordic Ski team won the 10K Skate by nearly 45 seconds as the Golden Knights competed on Sunday at the Middlebury Invitational, held at Rikert Outdoor Center.

Following the cancellation of the Saturday event due to cold weather, the Golden Knights performed well with the extra day of rest. Clarner won the 10K Skate with a time of 22 minutes, 2.5 seconds, topping the field of 38 and leading the runner-up by 43.9 seconds. Adam Jansen just missed out on a top three podium spot by 2.6 seconds, placing fourth in 22:50.7, and Torsten Brickley followed in sixth place in 23:14.3, giving Clarkson a race-low 11 points. Silas Bartol was also in the top 10, finishing 10th overall in 24:19.3, while first-year collegians Nathaniel Burke (12th, 24:43.5), and Braydon Patch (15th, 25:04.04) were also in the top half of participants.

Oliver Dolcino edged his way into the top 20 for the Knights by claiming 20th in 26:24.2. William Poppleton (22nd, 26:58.7), Andrew Kanclerz (24th, 27:16.0), and Dillon Frank (25th, 27:16.9) were also in the top 25.

On the women's side, Skylar Francis had a podium spot by coming in third place out of 22 skiers in the 10K Skate, crossing the finish line with a time of 28:37.7. Janneke Baks was next for the Knights, placing 19th in 39:41.6, and Clare Janas ended up in 22nd in 41:07.2.
