Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Early Deficit Dooms Knights in 5-2 Loss at SLU

Canton, NY – After heading into the first intermission down by three goals, the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team outshot St. Lawrence 39-11 over the final 40 minutes of Saturday nights' contest against its Route 11 rivals, but the Golden Knights busy run on offense couldn't climb out of the early deficit, falling 5-2 to the Saints in ECAC Hockey play at Appleton Arena.

The Golden Knights fell to 11-13-2 overall and 5-7-2 in ECAC play, while the Saints ended a 16-game winless streak to move to 3-20-3 and 2-11-1. Clarkson looks to regroup back at Cheel Arena next weekend when the Knights begin a six-game homestand, opening with Princeton on Friday night.

Anything that could have gone wrong for the Golden Knights in the first period seemed to, as not only did Cameron Smith stop all of Clarkson's chances in the offensive end but the puck had eyes in the Green and Gold's defensive end. The Saints picked up their first goal of the game near the five-minute mark when Jan Olenginski utilized a screen to sneak one past Shane Soderwall to make it 1-0. Clarkson nearly tied the game a few moments later when Talon Sigurdson had a strong rush to the net, but it turned out to be a situation where he almost got too close, as Sigurdson's shot found the glove of Cameron Smith. That started a run of shots by the Knights, but most turned out to be wide or blocked by the St. Lawrence defense.

At 11:44, St. Lawrence picked up its second goal of the contest when a shot from the point was redirected in by Luke Santilli, either with a stick or off his body, for a 2-0 SLU advantage. A late penalty on a faceoff violation with only 5.9 seconds left in the period turned into a third goal for the Saints as Cooper Pierson tipped in a shot after a quick faceoff win by SLU, sending Clarkson to a three-goal deficit heading into the first intermission.

Clarkson came out strong at the start of the second period and it eventually resulted in a goal near the seven-minute mark of the frame. A shot from the left circle and high slot was kicked aside by Smith with a pad, but the rebound went right to the stick of Matthew Mayich, who had all kind of space for from beneath the left dot to flip the puck in at 6:59.

The Saints regained their three-goal advantage about five minutes later, taking advantage of another power play opportunity. It could have been just a one-goal deficit only seconds before when Erik Bargholtz won a race to the puck and had a step on the SLU defense, only to be denied on a sprawling stop by Cameron Smith, keeping Clarkson from scoring shorthanded. That turned into a rush in the other direction with the Saints setting up Rasmus Svartstrom on the doorstep at the right post. The puck worked from the right point to Tyler Cristall at the top of the left circle, where he could easily see Svartstrom unchecked, threading the needle with a pass for a quick tap in at 11:44.

Over the course of the final 20 minutes, 11 penalties were called for a total of 30 minutes as the two teams began to show their disdain for one another at virtually every whistle. In the final seven minutes, Keenan Rancier spent plenty of time shuffling back and forth between the bench and back to the goal as Clarkson tried to get back into the game with an extra attacker. The Knights made it interesting when Ryan Bottrill knocked in the puck off a scrum in front of the net at 16:46, but a penalty a minute later kept the Green and Gold from keeping their goalie on the bench as the Saints went on the power play. Just a few moments after the power play started, Rasmus Svartstrom scored his second goal of the night, knocking in a rebound at 17:47.

Clarkson ended the game with a 50-24 edge in shots on goal and a 91-44 lead in total shots. However, the Saints took advantage of their power play chances, going 3-for-6 while up a skater, and the Knights were 0-for-6. Clarkson also won the battle at the dots, winning 48 faceoffs to St. Lawrence's 29. Cameron Smith made 48 saves for St. Lawrence, while Shane Soderwall had 10 stops in the first period and Keenan Rancier made nine saves over the last two periods for Clarkson.
