Knights Offense Busy in 7-1 Defeat of RPI

Potsdam, NY – Raedyn Spademan scored twice, leading a group of five players that enjoyed a multi-point game for the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team, as the Golden Knights downed Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 7-1 in ECAC Hockey action Friday night at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights improved to 14-7-3 overall and 7-3-2 in the ECAC, matching the effort from their 7-1 win over RPI back in late-October, while the Engineers fell to 6-20-0 and 3-12-0 in league play. Clarkson looks to continue its strong run when it takes on Union College on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights dominated the first period with flurry of shots (31-6 overall, 17-1 in shots on goal) and kept Rensselaer constantly on defense with an excellent forecheck which limited the Engineers chances for stretches of possession. Despite the tilted ice, the Knights came away with just one goal in the first 20 minutes, scoring in the three minutes of the contest. Clarkson recovered the puck near its own blue line and had a long pass forward to Madison Chantler in the neutral zone. Chantler then skated her way into the slot near the hashes, but whiffed on her first attempt due to a stick-check. She quickly recovered for another shot that was denied by the pads of Reese Keating. However, a rebound fell to the stick of Raedyn Spademan and she beat Keating five-hole at 2:29 to make it 1-0.

Clarkson continued to hold possession and nearly picked up a second goal but for another outstanding save from Keating. The first attempt by Spademan was padded by Keating, and then a second was denied from Chantler, but the rebound fell to Chantler's stick for a wide open chance on the right side of the goal. Chantler shot into a seemingly empty void only to see Keating dive and glove the attempt before the puck could go over the line.

RPI had its lone shot of the period with only 12 seconds left before intermission while on the power play, and came up empty in the player-advantage at the start of the second. Once the teams were even, Clarkson was back to tilting the ice towards the RPI goal. A breakaway attempt by Lara Beecher was kicked aside by the left pad of Keating a little over two minutes into the period, but the Knights scored on the ensuing faceoff. Clarkson kept possession of the puck in its offensive zone and worked around the perimeter. A side-to-side pass from Kate Manness to Chantler had the RPI defense shifting, and Chantler took advantage, sending a pass to the bottom of the right circle for Bridget Stevenson. As had been the case on multiple occasions, Stevenson's first try was stopped, but the rebound bounced back out to her stick for a second opportunity which she would not miss, putting the tally at 2-0 at 2:42 in the second period.

Clarkson picked up another goal five minutes later while on the power play. Sara Manness carried the puck in through center ice and dropped the puck off for Sena Catterall. She then skated through the defense in the slot and held the puck to make Keating drop, and after the shot fake Catterall had plenty of time to backhand her shot into the vacated goal at 7:28.

The Knights picked up another even strength goal later on in the period. Lara Beecher was skating against two defenders and tried some fancy stick handling to get around them, but ended up leaving the puck behind her near the top of the slot. The puck was immediately picked up as if it was a drop pass to Raedyn Spademan, who claimed at full speed and ripped a wrist shot to the left post at 14:58.

The Green and Gold collected a fifth goal early on in the third period with Gabrielle Lalonde notching her first collegiate goal on the play. Paige Wallace sent a pass to Sara Manness, who then skated into the zone along the right side boards. Manness lost her skates and fell to her backside, but never lost the puck, salvaging the play with a backhand pass through the slot to Lalonde whose one-timer found the back of the net at 5:05.

Another rebound resulted in Clarkson's sixth goal of the contest roughly three minutes later. Lara Beecher tried for a wrap-around, but again the first shot was stopped. Beecher stuck with it and slapped the rebound in at 8:34, with the assists going to Manon le Scodan and Megan McKay.

The Engineers ended their scoreless run against the Knights on the power play with less than eight minutes remaining on the clock. Kendal Davidson ripped a one-timer from the top of the slot at 12:09 to eliminate Aneta Senkova's bid for a second consecutive shutout.

A later power play with only 35 seconds remaining in the contest allowed Clarkson to have one more chance to score. Kate Manness found her sister Sara Manness down by the goal line well beneath the dot. Manness found the top of the net off the tough angle from the right side with just 11 seconds to go in the contest.

Clarkson finished the game with an overwhelming advantage in both total shots (73-24) and shots on goal (44-11) while also nearly doubling up the Engineers in faceoffs (41-23). Senkova finished with 10 stops for the Knights, while Keating had 26 saves and Maelee Ambrass had 11 stops in relief of the RPI starter.
