Manness Scores in Seventh Straight Game to Help Knights Past Union, 5-1

Potsdam, NY – Despite spending a fair amount of time playing down a skater through penalties and an empty net, the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team was able to pick up a 5-1 win over Union College in ECAC Hockey action Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The 11th-ranked Golden Knights improved to 15-7-3 overall and 8-3-2 in ECAC Hockey play, while Union fell to 8-15-3 and 2-13-1. Clarkson will be over at St. Lawrence University on Tuesday in a rare midweek league game.

Clarkson opened the scoring near the midway point of the first period with a tremendous individual effort from Sena Catterall. Union tried to clear the puck out of its zone and accomplished the feat, but Catterall collected the puck near center ice. She then maneuvered around three Union defenders and went into the Union zone, skating over to the left circle where she took a shot from the dot and finished just inside the far post at 9:22.

Union was able to tie the game less than three minutes later when two fortunate ricochets went its way. While on the power play, Union was trying to work the puck around from the right side of the net with a pass and it took a lucky bounce off Keira Hurry's skate and right to another Garnet Charger stick. That turned out to be only one point of kismet during the power play, though, as a seemingly harmless shot from Karianne Engelbert appeared ready to go well wide of the Clarkson net, only to see it clip of Hurry's skate a second time and into the net at 12:12.

Although luck wasn't on the Knights' side during the tying goal, they would not be knotted up with Union for long. Less than 90 seconds later Clarkson took the lead when Sena Catterall took a pass from Manon le Scodan. Just before entering the Union defensive zone on a 2-on-3 rush, Catterall took a peak back to find where her trailer on the play might be and then skated forward a few more strides. After drawing the defense further into the zone, she backhanded a pass to Sara Manness and the first-year collegian maintained her hot streak on the scoresheet by scoring in the slot at 13:39. The goal was Sara Manness's 10th in her last seven games, a streak in which she has scored at least one goal in that stretch.

The second period saw Clarkson expand its lead to two goals with a bit of luck of its own and some poor timing by the Garnet Chargers. While Clarkson was working the puck around the perimeter, a Union defender pushed one of Clarkson's players from behind near the crease, creating a collision that took out Union goaltender Emma Rheaume. With all kinds of space, le Scodan scored from the slot at 4:25 for her second point of the contest. The play went under review, but was upheld due to the contact having been caused by Union in the first place.

The two teams went scoreless for the next 30-plus minutes, though Union almost pulled to within one shortly after the third period media timeout. Just off the faceoff Karianne Englebert's first shot was stopped by Arianne Leblanc and the rebound fell to Maddie Leaney. She had plenty of space to flip the puck in, but ended up hitting it clean in the center of the pipe, allowing Clarkson to maintain its two-goal advantage.

Down two goals late after coming up empty on the power play, Union pulled its goaltender for an extra attacker with just under two minutes left in the contest. Despite the extra attacker, it was Clarkson that was able to put another mark on the scoreboard when Kate Manness flipped the puck nearly the entire length of the ice and on net, scoring on the vacated space at 18:03. Clarkson also picked up an additional insurance marker on the power play in the waning seconds when le Scodan knocked in a rebound off a shot from Lara Beecher with just 4.3 seconds to go in the game.

Clarkson finished with a solid 71-42 advantage on shots and a 33-14 edge in shots on goal. Union was just 1-for-6 on the power play, while Clarkson avoided going scoreless in four tries with its late goal. Leblanc ended up with 13 saves for the Knights and Rheaume had 28 stops.
