Bishop Scores in Final Minute to Lift Knights Past Yale, 3-2

New Haven, CT – Freshman William Bishop could not have picked a better time to record his first collegiate goal, scoring the game-winner with just 31.5 seconds left in regulation to lift the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Yale University Saturday night at Ingalls Rink.

The Golden Knights evened their record at 11-11-0 overall and 5-5-0 in ECAC Hockey, while the Bulldogs fell to 5-11-0 and 4-6-0, Yale's second defeat at home in 2025-26.

After Tristan Sarsland tied the game on the power play with a little over two minutes left in the contest, the Knights were able to extend their winning streak to six straight thanks to Bishop's timely goal. Owen Van Steensel brought the puck in after a turnover in the neutral zone and tried his luck with a backhand but his attempt went just wide. Van Steensel collected the puck behind the goal and when pressured passed it back out to the point. The puck appeared as if it may head out of the zone, but Bishop gained possession without any pressure, turned and sent a pass to Ryan Bottrill at the bottom of the left circle. Yale's defense shifted from there and did not cover Bishop, who had skated into the slot and was well prepared for the return pass from Bottrill. Bishop did not miss from the slot right at the hash marks, hitting his one-timer into the open side of the net for the game-winner.

The victory for Clarkson was its sixth consecutive overall and fourth straight in ECAC play. The Knights will look to continue their run next weekend at Dartmouth and Harvard.

Clarkson found itself in a tough spot early on when Luka Sukovic was called for a five-minute major, but the Golden Knights put on a display during the penalty kill. Yale was unable to connect many passes together despite being up a skater for the extended stretch. The best scoring chance actually came from the Knights when Erik Bargholtz nearly beat Noah Pak shorthanded around the midway point of the kill. It took more than four minutes before the Bulldogs had any kind of extended time in the offensive zone with a true set-up, and Clarkson was able to kill off the five-minute penalty.

Although Yale had its chances shortly after the end of its power play, it was the Knights that were able to get on the scoreboard first. Ryan Bottrill worked with the puck behind the net and found Jace Letourneau on the doorstep near the left post. Instead of trying his own shot, Letourneau backhanded another pass to Erik Bargholtz, and he finished his one-timer off at 15:56 to put Clarkson up 1-0.

It appeared as if the Knights would head into the first intermission with a lead, but the Bulldogs struck back in the final minutes of the period. After Shane Soderwall was able to make a pad save, the Knights tried clearing the puck up the side wall only to have Yale block the escape. That quickly turned into an offensive opportunity for the Bulldogs as a pass from near the goal line was centered to Iisai Pesonen in the slot, where he controlled the pass with his right skate before backhanding a shot past Soderwall with only 24.2 seconds left in the period.

Just like Yale had an extended power play in the first period, the Knights had a long run with an extra skater thanks to back-to-back penalties, creating a sort of four-minute power play for the Green and Gold. Clarkson's first power play saw several good chances against Pak, but the best shots went just wide of the frame. Yale later had two tries on the power play as well, but also came up empty on its extra skater opportunities.

The Bulldogs went up with the two teams skating evenly late in the period. The Bulldogs entered the offensive zone on the left side with the set up similar to their first goal as a pass came from near the goal line back to the bottom of the left circle. David Andreychuk was waiting for a one-timer, hitting the quick shot to the far post before Shane Soderwall could get his glove on it, putting Yale up 2-1 at 13:18.

The third period was played evenly as the teams were very tactical in their play, trying to find an extra boost for their efforts. Clarkson went on the power play with 3:30 left in the game and after a shorthanded scare in its defensive zone, the Knights broke out for an opportunity at the other end. A number of shots were attempted the first by Owen Van Steensel that caused a flurry in front. Bottrill was denied and so was Tristan Sarsland, but Sarsland collected his own rebound and shot behind Pak in the midst of the scrum, tying the game 2-2 at 17:29.

The momentum shift was evident for the Knights as Clarkson was able to receive the heroics from William Bishop in the final minute.

Clarkson outshot Yale 57-44 in terms of total shots, but the attempts on goal were even 26-26, as were the faceoffs (32-32). Soderwall finished with 24 saves for Clarkson and Pak had 23 denials for the Bulldogs.
