Sarsland Goes End to End for OT Game-Winner Versus #14 Quinnipiac

Hamden, CT – Tristan Sarsland scored the game-winning goal near the halfway point of the overtime session as the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team upended 14th-ranked Quinnipiac 3-2 on Saturday night.

After gaining possession in the overtime period, Ryan Richardson and Jared Mangan may have earned the easiest assists of their careers. The puck sat behind the net as the team set up its 3-on-3 rush, with Sarsland skating in to take the puck and cruising up the left side boards. Sarsland was able to outrace his defender and turn him slightly, slowed his pace with a slight toe drag and then snuck the puck underneath Quinnipiac goaltender Dylan Silverstein, finishing off his coast-to-coast game-winner at 2:40.

The Golden Knights earned two points with the overtime win, improving to 11-1-0 on the road and moving the overall mark to 16-9-3 and 10-5-1 in ECAC Hockey play. Quinnipiac dropped to 17-9-2 and 11-4-1. The Green and Gold are back at home next weekend where they host Dartmouth and Harvard.

There were not many shots, on goal or otherwise, in the first few minutes of the game, but Clarkson nevertheless got on the scoreboard early. The Knights gained possession deep in its defensive end as Carter Rose picked up the puck and zipped a long pass up to Talon Sigurdson beyond the red line and just short of the far end's blue line. Sigurdson carried the puck into the Quinnipiac defensive zone and was involved in a puck battle along the boards before dropping a pass to Ryan Bottrill in the left wing circle. Bottrill then fired a one-timer on the Bobcats cage, beating Dylan Silverstein at 7:59 in the first period. It was Bottrill's third goal of the season and the first collegiate assist of Carter Rose's career.

Roughly six minutes later, a turnover in the neutral zone allowed Quinnipiac to tie the game. It was Chris Pelosi that was able to win a joust in the neutral zone and after the puck bounced around, Pelosi gained the puck and skated just over the blue line, sending a hard wrist shot through the legs of Ethan Langenegger just before the Clarkson goalie could drop to close the gap at 13:56.

Quinnipiac gained the lead shortly after its first goal, keeping the puck in the Clarkson defensive end by denying some clearing attempts. Jack Ricketts was alone on the left side, but his first shot was quickly denied when the Knights' defense came over to block the attempt. Ricketts regained the puck and held on instead of trying again, taking advantage of Langenegger closing on the post by sending a quick pass into the slot to Victor Czerneckianair, where he finished off the play at 15:45.

Both teams were buzzing in the second period as each team had numerous opportunities in transition with some open play. The Bobcats had a solid opportunity with a power play early on, but the Knights killed off the play without too much trouble along the way. Near the midway point of the stanza, a turnover in the Quinnipiac defensive end allowed the Knights to tie the game. The Bobcats had the puck behind the goal line near the left circle but Clarkson's checking forced a miscue and the puck ended up scooting out to Ellis Rickwood in the slot and Rickwood picked his spot with a wrist shot, tying the game at 10:01. Assists went to Ayrton Martino and Ryan Richardson.

Clarkson ended the second period and began the third on a penalty kill, but the Golden Knights were able to close out the chance thanks to three saves from Langenegger and blocks by Tate Taylor and Tristan Sarsland. Besides that early power play for the Bobcats, the best scoring chance of the period came for Quinnipiac when Mason Marcellus had a half stride ahead of the Clarkson defense in the slot, but his shot was denied by Langenegger's right pad before crashing into the net along with a Clarkson defender.

Each team had a chance in transition with less than four minutes to go, but both were unable to connect their passes despite 3-on-2 opportunities that could have proved to be the game-winner. But an even bigger play came roughly 90 seconds later when Langenegger came all the way out of his net near dot of the left circle to poke a puck away to avoid a 2-on-1, and then he did a quick reverse skate to return to the crease, smothering a puck in his midsection to end the rush.

Quinnipiac won the battle of shots 70-31, including 32-17 in shots on goal, but the Knights' defense was excellent, keeping the Bobcats off the board two power plays and blocking 23 total shots. Langenegger finished with 30 saves while Silverstein had 14 stops.
