Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Knights Jump Into Third in ECAC with 4-1 Win Over Dartmouth

Potsdam, NY – Getting on the scoreboard early in the first period, the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team had Dartmouth on its heels throughout Friday night's contest as the Golden Knights picked up a key 4-1 victory in ECAC Hockey play at Cheel Arena.

Post Game with Coach Houle

With the win, Clarkson moved into third place and just one out of second in the ECAC Hockey standings, improving to 11-5-1 in league and 17-9-3 overall. Dartmouth missed its opportunity to move into the top four for now, and fell to 9-7-1 in conference games and 12-10-2 overall. Clarkson faces Harvard on Saturday afternoon to finish off the weekend.

The key for the Knights on Friday was making sure that very few of Dartmouth's chances ended up between the pipes. The Big Green were held to only 13 shots on goal despite a pair of power plays and playing much of the final six minutes up a skater with their goaltender pulled.

Post Game with Ryan Bottrill

Clarkson was on the board less than two minutes into the game, when a slight check from Talon Sigurdson was enough to knock a Dartmouth player off the puck behind the net. Sigurdson collected the loose puck and attempted a wraparound from the left side, but was stuffed by Emmett Croteau. However, Croteau couldn't find the loose puck in the crease, allowing Ryan Bottrill to pounce and knock it in at the 1:45 mark.

Later in the period, the Knights picked up what would prove to be the game-winner on a transition play. Ryan Richardson gained possession near the blue line in Clarkson's defensive end and flipped it forward to Ayrton Martino, creating a 2-on-1 with Ellis Rickwood. A Dartmouth defender attempted to break up a late pass from Rickwood but was late on getting in front of it, allowing Martino to swoop in and finish with a backhand at 17:35.

Post Game with Ayrton Martino

Through the first two periods, Dartmouth had 31 total shots, but only eight made it through the Clarkson defense to challenge Ethan Langenegger between the pipes. That rate wouldn't change much in the third period either, and the Knights knocked in an insurance goal while on the power play. Martino was in the slot to draw the Dartmouth defenders and sent a pass to the bottom of the right circle for Trey Taylor, and he would not miss with a sniping one-timer at 14:04 to put the tally at 3-0.

Shortly after the third Clarkson goal, Dartmouth pulled its goalie for an extra attacker. For five minutes Clarkson kept the Big Green off the scoreboard, but eventually CJ Foley was able to flip a wrister through traffic and score with 38.2 seconds left on the clock. Clarkson did get the goal back only 17 seconds later when Martino recorded his third point of the game with an empty netter.

Langenegger finished with 12 saves and Croteau had 21 for Dartmouth. Clarkson had a 25-13 advantage in shots on goal and a 54-46 lead in total shots. The Knights also went 1-for-4 on the power play while Dartmouth was without a goal in two tries.
