Box Score
Potsdam, NY – Ending a seven-game slide on Saturdays, the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team swept its conference weekend at home thanks to a 5-3 victory over Colgate on Saturday night in Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights jumped from 11th to a tie for 8th in the ECAC Hockey standings with the win, improving to 7-11-0 overall and 3-5-0 in conference contests, while Colgate fell to 6-10-2 and 4-3-1. Clarkson has one more game, an exhibition game against the US National Development team next Saturday, before it takes a two-week break for the holidays.

Clarkson never trailed in its game against Colgate on Saturday, but the Raiders did rally to tie the contest on three different occasions, constantly keeping pressure on the Knights before the Green and Gold two in the third to close out the win.

The Golden Knights got on the scoreboard first with a 4-on-2 rush in transition. After a blocked attempt from Colgate, the puck found the stick of Luka Sukovic and he tipped it forward to Remi Gelinas. Sukovic rushed towards the crease and brought a defender with him, helping to create some space for Gelinas, who then pass the puck into the slot for Matthew Mayich and the freshman blasted a shot from the slot to make it 1-0 at 11:06.

Although Colgate was on the penalty kill late in the first period, it was the Raiders that had the best scoring chances while the teams were uneven, putting together some rushes shorthanded, but Shane Soderwall made the stops he needed to when necessary.

The second period saw the two teams see-saw back and forth as each squad tallied two goals in the middle stanza. Colgate tied the game early in the second shortly after a faceoff in the Clarkson zone as the puck worked back to the point for a shot from Simon Labelle. Though his attempt was denied by Soderwall, the puck bounced down to the stick of Josh Niedermayer, who poked it in at 4:23 to knot the score 1-1.

Less than two minutes later, Owen Van Steensel put Clarkson back up a goal by being in the right spot at the right time. Jared Mangan got a shot off from the slot that clanged off the crossbar, but a fortunate bounce found Van Steensel. After the puck hit the crossbar, it ricocheted back off of Van Steensel's facemask and down to his skates at the top of the crease, where he was able to maintain his composure and knock the puck in to return the lead to the Knights, 2-1, at 6:15.

Colgate was able instigate its way into a second goal, picking up a score while on the power play. After the Knights were whistled for a roughing penalty, it put the Raiders in a 5-on-3 position, and Colgate capitalized with a one-timer by Michael Neumeier at 10:54. Fortunately for the Knights, the team was able to kill off the final 90 seconds of 5-on-4 hockey to keep the game tied.

It looked like the two teams might head into the second intermission still locked up, but Clarkson scored with 13.8 seconds left in the period. Van Steensel had the puck behind the Colgate net and sent a centering pass into the slot for Talon Sigurdson. He didn't quite get the pace he wanted on his backhanded attempt, but it was enough to create a rebound and Jared Mangan was there to chop in the rebound to make it 3-2.

That advantage was short-lived in hockey time, despite the intermission, as Colgate scored just 20 seconds into the third period. Isaiah Norlin wristed a shot from the point through traffic to tie the game 3-3. However, the momentum for the Raiders wouldn't last long when the Knights scored only 80 seconds later. Following a faceoff in the Colgate zone, the Raiders were hassled heavily by the Clarkson forecheck. The pressure applied forced a turnover, allowing Justin Cote to stop into an errant pass, walk in, and score on a wrist shot at 1:40, making it 4-3 on the freshman's third goal of the year.

Colgate tried to empty its net around the two-minute mark, but some neutral zone possession kept Reid Dyck in the crease for an extra 20 seconds. The Raiders nearly tied the game with a minute to go, but Soderwall stopped a backhand and the rebound shot from Jack Brandt went wide. Clarkson took advantage, surviving the extra attacker getting an empty net goal from Erik Bargholtz with five seconds to go.

Clarkson ended the game with a 31-27 edge in shots on goal and a 60-53 lead in total shots. Colgate was 1-for-3 on the power play while the Knights were scoreless in four tries. Shane Soderwall finished with 24 saves and Reid Dyck ended up with 26 stops for Colgate.
