Roberts and Knights on Podium for Classic Sprint on Day Two of USCSA Nationals

Lake Placid, NY – Conner Roberts was on the podium for the second straight day with a third-place finish as the Clarkson University Nordic Ski team came up just short of winning the Classic Sprint on Wednesday at the USCSA National Championships, held at Mt. Van Hoevenberg.

The Golden Knights' men placed second among 13 teams with a total of 21 points, five shy of the 16 points recorded by Paul Smiths. Clarkson's women were in the 10th spot among 14 teams with 106 points. Clarkson and the rest of the Nordic field is off until Friday morning when the 15K Classic starts at 10:00 am.

After solid showings in the morning, Roberts qualified for the top heat in the finals for the Classic Sprint, ending up in third with a time of 3 minutes, 14.6 seconds. Both Noah Payne and Joey Rouhana competed in the second finals heat, helping to insure a low score. Payne came in eighth with a time of 3:21.9 as the second-fastest in the heat and Rouhana claimed the 10th spot in 3:32.5, fourth in the 'B' finals heat.

Just outside the scoring and the final two heats was Kai Richter, who ended up in 13th after his time of 3:32.5 in the quarterfinals round, which consisted of five heats to narrow the field to 12 skiers. Oliver Dolcino also made it that far, placing 25th. Torsten Brickley (43rd) and Adam Jansen (45th) fell short of qualifying for the quarterfinals heats, with the original qualifying times dropping the original group of 61 skiers down to 30.

The women didn't have anyone qualify for the five heats of quarterfinals, though Skylar Francis was the first cut from making it that far as she placed 31st overall among the 56 participants. Lillian Magnus also was just on the outside looking in, coming in 39th. Raegan Joly (48th), Sadie Williams (51st), and Clare Janas (56th) were further down the list of finishers.
